I think that when you learn a fuge it takes a lot of time to learn the text if you from the beginning try to make the voices independent in their articulation, phrasing and dynamics. Just learning the text is considerably faster.
So I was wondering if you think initially learning the text, and only approximately rendering the phrasing of the individual voices, would prevent the student from later improving the interpretation.
If one first learns the text, one can always later carry out the regular procedure of playing voices separately and in different combinations (but not all the voices simultaneously).

So... Is it better to first learn the text?
