on: May 19, 2005, 08:52:51 AM
Hello All

Just came across you're site in the hope of finding some like minded players.

Am interested in blues / new orleans style AND am hoping that someone can point me in the direction of a good website that can give me a few new ideas on playing  :)etc.

Thanx

Owen

Hi, I'm a new member looking back at some old posts. I don't know of any websites for N.O. style of piano, but if you check out Homespun Tapes, Dr. John does a great 3 book and cd series on how to play in this style. Eye opening stuff.

I play Jazz and Blues a lot, but I don't use a workbook. Improv is what it's all about.
Ahh llamas......is there anything they can't do?

Um, so is it "unbluesy" to listen to a cd of a guy talking about the style, listen to the music and do some score study?

I started playing by ear and experimenting with improv way before I taught myself to read music. ( I'm 29 years old - music perf. major). I can play from charts, fake books, and from the top of my head, but I don't see anything wrong with reading a helpful book.

Yeah, good point. But I mean workbook as in teaching you, as opposed to just having the pieces.

oh yeah, definitely. It's pointless to learn Blues or N.O. style from a score. I'll agree with that.

I play jazz. I read through fake books which seems to help me the most. I dunno know if thats what you would call 'reading from the score' but thats how I learned. Also, the improv is a big deal like Llamaman said but I think a very big role is your ear. Transcribe solos from any kind of music you like and your ear will develop which will in turn help out your improvisation.
