i like both, but voted for gershwin.  guess it's that i rather like spontaneousness sometimes, and don't wish to hear only classical ALL the time - but sometimes a little jazz.

ok. have to modify here.  ravel's concerto IS jazzy, isn't it.  AND, it has a cool harp "quasi-cadenza."  i voted for both.  what will happen to me now?
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

I picked Gershwin because I was blown away by the fact that I really like it (I hate everything else of Gershwin).

Ravel is the more complete composer.  His concerto contains some jazz elements, prominently displayed, but it's about a lot more than that.  Ravel manages to incorporate jazz but still retain his own, distinct voice.

I like Gershwin as a popular music composer, but his "palette" is limited.   His fusion of classical and popular never quite works for me.  It still sounds like popular music overlaid with a classical pretentiousness, not really a fusion of the two.   I love "Porgy and Bess," but I don't think of it as opera (even though Gershwin apparently did).  It's more akin to musicals.  Maybe it's just semantics after all.  It doesn't make me like the piece any the less -- I just think about it differently.
