www.Cliburn.org

You can listen to the Van Cliburn Competition, live, for free online at the competition site instead of flying to Fort Worth. You can even vote on your favorite pianist, as there will be a special award given to the online voter's choice of the best display of pianism. Granted, listening online to artists can never replace the energy of being in the performance hall itself, but it is the next best thing available.

I have been watching some webcasts - but as I am in the UK the time difference is such that I can only see the afternoon sessions.  It is a shame that the competition is not available as video or audio on demand.  I believe that earlier competitions were available in that way - however I note that DVDs of all the concerts are being sold, and assume that this would damage sales.

Of the few players I have been able to see, I have been most impressed by Di Wu who played today, and in particular by her Prokofiev 7.

Also perhaps of interest,

News outlets have it that Cabassi and Kobrin have become fast friends during this past period of competetion....

That could be a duet pair..Cassabi and Kobrin,   but which would actually get top billing...Lets see...Kobrin and Cabassi....that works too...

Yes,  it may not be a death knell...

I got there too late to hear it live ..will go back later, and listen...

Notice two things...Kobrin is playing Late...and is doing the Rach Rhap...already on today by Sa Chen...Someone who is astute on this work might deign to compare the two tomorrow or later?

yes. i don't know if it was recorded in competition, but if it was, it goes to show you can completely mess up a work and still win :)

..."mess up a work and still win..." indeed..and,

Plano and huang both on Rach 2...indeed again, but gives a chance for comparing them.

Many believe it has been a very good comp...I can't say; I am not astute enough, but it equals for me at least, some prev. I have followed...but I havn't really heard a lot yet...And I guess many of you were able to listen live more than I...

Cabassi is screwing up his octz in the Brahms concerto atm.

Davide Cabassi majorly f##ked up the double octaves in the development section of Brahms 1st Piano Concerto (mvt 1).  It's like: "did he not practice this?"   NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME, FOLKS.

And his octave trills were mushy, sluggish, and imprecise.  NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME, FOLKS.

MORAL TO THE STORY: If you're gonna play this concerto, you'd better have your sh#t together.  :P

And another thing about Davide Cabassi: what is up with his extreme facial expressions and body movements?  I mean, talk about distracting!  ::)  :o  :P

I was bracing myself for when he would fall backwards off the piano bench!

****

And his cues to the orchestra were often too early or too late ........

****

And don't get me started on his erratic tempos .......

****

And those octaves in mvt 1 ........

i prefer his "screwed up" brahms anytime over the prokofiev 2nd played next day - at least he understood what's this all about! the poor kid (i know she's only 19, so it's understandable why she played the way she did), why did she have to go for such a complex concerto?

i agree the winner was predictable, esp after his final recital - his rachmaninov was great, but his ravel... i still can't believe what i heard! definitely the best gaspard i've ever heard! did anyone happen to record it?

the runners up... sa chen was ok, she's clearly talented and a hard worker; as for yang... no comment.

I hope for a hearing of the Gaspard...(frm anda..> quote.."....Best Gaspard I've ever  heard!..,.."..)  (I was working an extra shift...didn't hear any of it.. :(),

Perhaps it will be on recording as it will be worth comparing if you are right...many have tried...and failed...to do it top notch..(For which I may ask please,...who should I look for in a performance for my CD shelf..?)

Thanks!

Actually, Kobrin's Gaspard kills Chen's.

i disagree. sa chen's gaspard was very correct and very well played, while kobrin's was pure poetry.

Why is that?

Because instead of playing the notes, he took his time, and was musical, and original.

Sa Chen rocks, but Kobrin owns this.

It was, basically, the perfect recording.

I found Chen's to be mundane. I thought Kobrin's Ondine was alright, Le Gibet was utterly boring, and Scarbo was absolutely great. I share similar sentiments with the rest of what he played.  :)
