An amazing device everyone should get...
on: May 24, 2005, 02:49:51 AM
Hey everyone, here's a device which not only produces high quality recordings but would make uploading one's work to the web even easier:

https://www.edirol.com/products/info/r1.html

Make sure to check out the piano wav made with its internal microphone. Beautiful!

Did you recorded the pieces you posted here with this device?

Oh dear me, no. I should have made that clear. I used a wal mart microphone and a talk boy for everything here.

But definitely check out Edirol's own samples made with that device. Its amazing. I want one.

was looking for the price.  do you know about how much they cost?
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

I bought the R-1 two months ago. It is very handy. Pianists need a portable recorder. This one is more expensive than mini-disc, but just to get the recording digital and to be able to transfer it to a computer is worth it! I have already my harddisk full of recordings.

nordlys: I'm under the impression since the R-1 has no moving parts, there is absolutely zero hiss in recordings it produces. Did your mini disc by comparison produce any hiss in recording?  I think its nice to record directly to a computer chip anyway, because then I'm completely at liberty to burn the recording to a disk or trash it without wasting a mini disc or cd.

The R-1 has no moving parts. It records to a memory card. But to say there is zero hiss is not true, because there definitely is hiss. I guess this depends on the built-in microphone parts and so on, which are probably good but not of top quality. It doesn't give a professional recording, but the quality is good! Remember, it creates 16bit or 24bit wav in contrast to the mini-disc which uses a compressed format. And this is one of the few portable recorders which exist. I imagine more will come, and replace the mini-disc.

I'm sure its a hell of a lot better than a Tiger Talkboy. I'd imagine the hiss is FAR less pronounced in the R-1 than in tape recorders.

nordlys: do you use linux perchance? I'm thinking of using linux on my PC, but I want to make absolutely certain I can use the R-1 before I actually do that. I suppose I could do a dual boot, but it'd be nice to know I can use it in linux.

I don't use linux, but I have tried the R-1 with linux. So I know that it is possible to transfer files through the USB from the R-1 to linux.
