pedaling in Beethoven Sonatas
on: May 26, 2005, 09:33:48 PM
Ok, so I started working on the Pastoral today. The first movement doesn't pose any problems at all for a while. The question becomes though. Is pedaling aloud? If not the the beginning is pretty awkward to play legato. I never pedaled during his first sonata opening mvt. I didn't feel it qualified for it. I have seen my teacher pedal during the Appassionate though. So, is this a sonata that pedaling is aloud or no?

Yes pedaling is allowed.  For the second movement it is quite necessary.  It's not wether pedaling is allowed in a certain type of music or not, it's how you use the pedal to achieve a certain effect.

Pastoral 1st mvt.  The repeating D's in the LH.  Think of these as a timpani drone.  Yes and the beginning needs to sound legato.  So that means you use the pedal, but change more frequently.  You can also use partial pedaling if need be - 1/2 or 1/4 pedal may be all that is required in some places.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Connect as much as you can, reasonably. If you can't, don't feel bad about using pedal, just don't use too much!

I like that answer. I was using the pedal more as a means of connection, coming up and down quite frequently.
