Brahms Capriccio Op 76 Nr 2 question
on: May 27, 2005, 02:13:25 PM
Hi,
I'm working on this piece...
In bar 5, the edition I'm referencing (EDITION PETERS Nr 8941) indicates the grace notes in thirds, i.e. G over E (grace notes) resolve to F# over D on the "and" of 2. Something similar happens in thirds in the following bar.
But when this theme repeats at bar 38 and again at 99, the grace notes are no longer indicated in thirds. Instead the grace note is just the G, resolving to the F# over D.
I can't figure out if Brahms intended these grace notes to always be in thirds, which would be consistant (and therefore this edition has a misprint in bars 38 and 99), or if he really just wants the single grace note at that point. If he just wants the single grace note, I'm not sure I understand why...as the sound of the grace note in thirds is quite delightful in bar 5! Why would he write it one way in bar 5 and then change it after that?
Any thoughts?

I played that piece just last semester. I have misplaced the music and didn't look at it much when I had it.....bad habit of memorizing and never looking at it again
. I remember that I always played it with the single grace note on the G to F# in the later measures. I'm not sure why Brahms would have written it that way...maybe a tiny bit of variety. But after getting it to the right tempo, I found it alot easier to just use one grace note. It's a very enjoyable piece...Good luck.
