Which music to buy (3 choices)?
on: May 28, 2005, 11:53:01 AM
Hi!

I want to buy some sheet-music as a gift for a friend.
I have 3 choices:
---------------------
1) https://store.yahoo.com/doverpublications/0486426629.html
   +  https://store.yahoo.com/doverpublications/0486438244.html

2) https://store.yahoo.com/doverpublications/0486223604.html

3) https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0769240895/qid%3D1117280929/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/002-6719267-0482448
------------------------

------------------------
1) 11 haydn sonatas + 6 mozart sonatas (dover)
2) bach: complete: goldberg, english, french, partitas, inventions, sinfonias (dover)
3) mozart complete sonatas (warner bros)
------------------------

I think 2) contains much much more, and is a better buy,
1) might be more fun than 3),
3) and 1) are better for learning sight-reading, wich my friend needs, but I doubt that he wants :)

What would you buy and why?

Assuming the friend will be playing from these, I wouldn't.

The two Dovers -- I've got nothing against the D editions. And have several, but of works/composers not too easy to find. I'd particularly be against the Bach -- last time I checked, those editions had really small music -- fine for score-reading, ut a real nuisance to play from.

The Mozart -- I'd get Broder/Presser. No reason not to, imho.

I would go either 1 or 2. Haydn or Bach.

There is nothing wrong with Dover, they do an excellent job reprinting historic editions (most of the time).  Also their binding methods are excellent.

However Dover would not be my first choice for these composers.  I have the Bach compilation you are talking about.  Quite complete, but hard to read.  The music is squished on the page.

I've never seen the WB Mozart sonatas.  I can't comment.

If No.1 is a reprint of Schirmer, don't get it.

Out of the 3 choices I'd probably pick No.2.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

1 or 3.
I have the dover bach- print is very small and a pianist friend of mine tells me that that edition is borked, wrong notes and harmonies and such. :-\
[lau] 10:01 pm: like in 10/4 i think those little slurs everywhere are pointless for the music, but I understand if it was for improving technique

I decided to get the Mozart (Warner Bros, Kalmus) becuase I think one can learn a lot about sight-reading there.
The dover edition is out of stock, so it wont ship on time. Maybe Kalmus is better, it says Urtext atleast.

Thanks for the help again, I wont get Bach.
