Composer and Transcriptor - credit sharing
on: May 29, 2005, 01:50:13 PM
Hi!!

I have recently bought a CD where Konstantin Schervakov plays Liszt's piano transcription of Beethoven's 2º and 5º simphonies (NAXOS).
I really recommend it  :)
It is amazing how a single instrument, under a great pianist's hands, can sound almost as a full orchestra !!

Here goes my trivial question:

I have lots of CDs, and i try to keep them organized by composer.
Where would you put this CD?

Under Beethoven? (my choice)
Under Liszt?

The question may sound completely irrelevant, but in the end it is a matter of how much credit should go to the original composer and how much to the transcriptor.

In my personal opinion, eventough i see that Liszt made an amazing work, this is definitively BEETHOVEN's music.

What do you think?

I personally keep another different directory for transcriptions alone.  But it's up to you - its wherever you think the credit may lie with any particular piece.  Sometimes Liszt took a simple theme and expanded it so much that it really becomes moslty his (take the Paganini etudes for example - I would never list these under a 'Paganini' directory).  I personally feel the transcriber gets most of the credit in most cases, but as for the Beethoven symphonies, Liszt stayed so true to the score that I feel they fit better under Beethoven.
A modern house without a flush toilet... uncanny.
