Need help with timing in a piece (pic included)
on: June 01, 2005, 07:55:17 PM
I have provided 1 bar of music from a ray charles song I am learning ''Song For You'' written by Leon Russel..... I am having trouble with the timing

Im not sure how any of you could help, possibly tapping it out and recording the taps....

I know its 1.5 notes with the added.  and thatthe little dash (not sure about the technical words) is a indication of going directly from that note to the chord e.g. the Ab major

I can sometimes tap ito ut, but playing it is hard, I get stuck on when to transfer from the Ab chord to the next ''quavers?''

thank you

btw I had to do this in paint since my sibelius is too damn hard.... lol

Try to simplify the music. So : 1  4th note = 4  16th notes, etc. I'm don't really know english terms for rythms so basically it's the only thing i can help with.

You should start by tapping the rythm slowly.  As you see, the time signature is 4 4. That means that every bar contains 4 quarter notes.  If u divide the bar into 4 sections, you will see that the first and the third are identical in terms of time (1 3/4 beats and a quarter beat). The other two are trivial.

To get the timing of notes right, you can set the metronome so as to tap each sixteenth note instead of each quarter note. You should play the Ab chord for three taps then in the fourth play the Bb for only one beat.

Do this many times until you do it easily, then make the metronome tap each eigth note and do the same concept. Then, do it in the time signature indicated.

That's what I do when faced with such things.
I hope this helps,
Khaled

count the dotted eight note as 1 ta tee and the 16th note as ta.A quarter note would be counted as 1 ta tee ta.

If you come across stuff you absolutely cannot undestand make the fastest note in that phrase equal to 1.
so

double tailed notes  = 1
one tailed notes       = 2
one tailed with dot   = 3
no tail, full note with stem = 4

so then you have from your score:

(3) (1) (4) (3) (1) (2) (2)

so you can simply count at a steady pace and clap. Clap every time you say 1.

i.e:
    1,2,3          1      1,2,3,4      1,2,3     1    1,2    1,2
CLAP+HOLD   CLP   CLP+HLD  CLP+HLD  CLP  C+H  C+H

That is the idiot proof counting i give to students who won't teach themselves to recognise written rhythms. You have to count faster and faster so that you listen to yourself clap more than count, eventually you abandon the counting and just clap.
