How about an easier Chopin prelude? There are some nice nocturnes that you could probably look at as well.

I would try Chopin's prelude in e minor. If you like that, there is a book of Chopin's easier peices that you would probably be ready for, their all fairly short peices that are about intermediate level.

What's the Op. # on that?
It's Op.28 No.4, it's a really nice peice, it was my first Chopin prelude.

Try his prelude in E minor, B minor or A major. They are the only 'easier' preludes out of the entire 24, Raindrop and the C minor one I find are a bit harder to play than the ones I listed, but you could try those too...
They aren't too difficult but all three sound very nice, I like the B minor the best. Another easy one is the B flat minor

Debussy : Doctor Gradus Ad Pornassum
Some Mozart sonata might be cool.
Some Mendelssohn Songs without word would be cool (Try the Venetian Gondolas or something)

Dr Gradus Ad Parassanum will take a LOT of practice to perfect. After all it is on the ALCM diploma syllabus which is higher than grade 8 ABRSM.
Try playing any of the Children's Corner by Debussy.

It seems that you diagnosed very well your problem as to have attempted to play pieces above your level. Changing to easier pieces is a wise step in the right direction.
There are two recent threads you could find useful (Sorry I don't know how to quote them properly, you must search for them):
"What is the problem with playing easy pieces", in this same board, and
"Beautiful music that is not hard to play", in the Repertory board.

Why don't you try Chopin's Berceuse in Db, op. 57? It is a beautiful piece with an easy ostinato left hand part, which stays the same throughout the whole piece except for a few small changes here and there. There are a few hard spots for the right hand, but the piece is fairly simple once you get those down.

Try Ravel's Prelude, I found it to be a fairly easy peice, due to its shortness and slow tempo (only quarter = 60!).
Or try Chopin's Cantibile (sp?) in Bflat (Posthumous). Its another fairly short peice, and it gives a good introduction to Chopin's style.
Stravinsky's "les cinq doights" or the five fingers (the same peice) are very easy peices, but they are very fun to play.
Also you could try the c minor Chopin prelude.
Or, if you have a piano playing friend, you could try to learn Ravel's "Mother Goose suite"
