Can anyone recommend some recordings of these pieces?  What are your opinions of these works?  Which ones are your favorites? ;D

DEBUSSY - 12 Études
Mitsuko Uchida (piano)
Philips 464 698-2

But you might find Garrick Ohlsson (cpl.) and Sviatoslav Richter (excerpts only) of interest. But Uchida is my favourite - there is fire and passion, complete technical mastery as well as musicality of the highest order.

Try the new recording by Jeanne Stark-Iochmans. It's a live recording. She plays a litte slower than some, and brings out voices you normally wouldn't hear.

I have an excellet recording of the complete Debussy Etudes and the Berg piano sonata recorded by Maurizio Pollini on Deutsche Grammophon.  I have several friends who have it and find it wonderful, as do I.

Have you ever tried Jean Yves-Thibaudet? One of my friends has him playing the Etudes, and she really likes it. I think that he does some strange things with the pedal, and it really isn't as.. clean cut (for lack of better phrase) as Debussy meant it to be, but it's a very interesting recording. I believe that he recorded the complete Debussy piano works on two CD sets... Hope that helps!

One of the very best recordings of these etudes was done by Anthony di Bonaventura.  Unfortunately, I can't give you the label and CD number.  I have here the rendition by the late Paul Jacobs.  It's ok, but not as good as di Bonaventura's
