Piano Touch Sensitivity
on: June 07, 2005, 04:17:15 PM
I also want to know..for those with certain touch preferences..when you encounter a different actioned piano..does it significantly negatively effect your playing?..

because i know with my light touch at home..i feel much more comfortable on the keyboard...but the Bostons at my school..they have a harder action and pressing those keys requires some strength in comparison to my softy at home..thus making it hard for me to do faster paced mozart runs etc etc...just wanna know what you guys think thanks

I prefer heavier actions.  I am a more "into the keys" type of pianist, opposed to the "on top of the keys" approach.

Although sometimes it's a lot of fun to play on lighter action pianos and play extremely fast.

me too!  i like also when a piano has an even action (tend to notice this better with a stiffer action - myself)  i hate it when a piano is easy or hard - but not regulated.  i have a better control over the dynamics.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

I'd have to say I like medium action....if its too heavy I feel "pushed around". if its too light I feel like I have no control. But that nice range between is where the keys of teh piano almost carry your fingers and it makes you feel like you're much better than you are. My little kawai is JUST below that nice range of medium weight touch.

I like a heavy action because it gives me greater musical control. It might be because I'm not a particularly good player but I find it very difficult to vary dynamics on a light piano; I don't like that sensation of everything running away with me.

I personally like a heavy action. For some reason i am able to control it better.

On a light action i am simply all over the place. On an organ, I'm hopeless.

Medium?

...it isn't THAT big of a deal...just as long as the piano has very fast response...that's what matters to me...

I have several recurring nightmares as a pianist:

1. I'm confronted with a keyboard with less than 88 keys (OMG -- it's hell on earth)

2. I'm confronted with a keyboard in which the keys are too close together.

3. I'm confronted with a keyboard with light / delicate touch.  I like heavy action, baby!

What a strange poll. I voted for light. I hear so much of this ow! ow! ow! too heavy sound. I hope 'light' doesn't exclude playing with strength when it's needed.
