Various Composers - Musical Clue
on: June 09, 2005, 05:27:29 AM
How to play Musical Clue:

The object of Musical Clue is similar to the Riddle threads in anything but piano.  A recording shall posted with up to five short excerpts, and whoever guesses all five correctly, or who guesses the last unaccounted for piece, shall be declared winner, and must then prepare a recording, or if unable to do so, pass on the responsibility.

This is intended for for advanced pianists and the like - therefore, please don't place recordings of overplayed, popular pieces.  They should require a least some thought to figure out.  Also, don't place impossibly difficult excerpts.  Stick to well-known composers, but you may pick from lesser known music by those well-known composers.

Hopefully Nils will let us do this, because there are many benefits to this kind of thing.  Firstly, the files are quite small and take up little space, but most importantly, this is an excellent oppurtunity to expose pianists to lesser-known, yet beautiful repetoire outside the mainstream.  Who knows, someone might hear a sample they like, and feel inspired to start learning that piece!

Just to clarify, you must specify the composer and the name of the piece.  All the excepts must be correctly identified before a winner shall be declared.  This does not mean you have to identify all of them at once - many people can help contribute, but whoever finishes the guessing becomes the winner.

The first set of excepts are attached! (By the way, I am actually playing these.  If you would like to give me suggestions on interpretation, etc.  that would be very helpful to me as well.)

This is a great idea nightscape and I've actually been wanting to do this.  Though I think the excepts you posted are far too long - just a few notes will do, although I can't say I recognize all these pieces.  But since nobody else has answered the riddle I will offer what I can.
1) Chopin Mazurka Op. 6 #1 (did you transpose it to obscure the key? ;))
2) Debussy?  Is this the piece Rob is referring to?
3) Bach - I just know I've heard this tune before.
4) Rachmaninoff would be my best guess.
5) Either an obscure Scriabin or Chopin mazurka (forgive me for not knowing whether or not it's Chopin :o)

allchopin, those are pretty close.  But since nobody seemed interested, it's probably because I made it too hard.  But anyway the answers are:

1) Chopin mazurka op.6 no.1
2) The little shepard from Debussy's Children's Corner
3) Bach prelude no.14 in f# minor Book 2 WTC
4) Ravel Prelude (1913)
5) Scriabin Impromptu a la mazur op.2 no.3

So why don't we change the rules, then?  This time, just post a few notes (like the opening measure) of a single piece and see if anybody gets it.  That might make people get more interested in it!  If you want, you can go ahead and go allchopin since you made a good effort (I'm surprised you thought of Scriabin for #5, I thought it was too hard myself).  And yes, I accidently transposed all of them, as I used my digital and it was set to transpose (I didn't realized it until after I posted the recording.  I guess I'm tone deaf or something!)

OK this one's pretty easy... probably a little too long, or an easily identifiable part...

Anyway here it is...

Guess the piece!

Can't say I recognize it  :(
Perhaps since nobody seems to be throwing out any answers you could post a little more or give cryptic hints?

Well, it is a type of dance, you got that right. Here is a little more of it from the same part of the piece. It should be easy now if you're familiar with the piece.

Oh and I think that if we said even if you guess the piece you don't necessarily have to post a hint of your own. You may pass if you wish. I think this way more people who may not be familiar with editing audio will be more apt to respond.

Good luck!

oh and I'll give a hint... It is a work rooted in literature...

It is a section from one of his 'larger' works. Here is a larger sample. if you can't get it now then I'll just have to give it up...

Why, of course, that is Final Fantasy VII's "Off the Edge of Despair" by Nobuo Uematsu (arranged for piano).

Okay, then, here is a moderately difficult one.

(The pianist in this recording is a rather famous Russian virtuoso...   But I figure it's fine since he's dead and this recording is also available free online anyway.  Bonus points to whomever can guess the pianist!)

I really have no clue...is it Ravel?...Schostakovich?...Prokofiev?...Bartok?

Here's another musical hint.  It may help you narrow down the composer by means of style.... from there just listen to the instrumentation and you should have the piece.

As far as style goes, in this section listen to the piano and the particular doubling it uses, which is a common feature of this composer....

Sound's like Ravel, but Ravel isn't Russian. Hmm.......next thought comes Gershwin, but he's American. Must be modern.....well I only really know one modern russian composer: Rachmaninov.

Edit: Lol, I'm dumb :p I thought you meant the composer was russian.

Yes it is Richter.  This is my favorite recording of this piece (he really puts some power into that difficult piano part!)
