Trilling with 4th and 5th fingers...
on: June 17, 2003, 08:28:45 AM
I'm not asking this because of any particular piece but I was just wondering...  Is it physically possible to trill with all your fingers at the same speed?  Like if I try to trill with my 2nd and 3rd fingers its like a joke go as fast as I want but with 4th and 5th?  Barely get any kind of trill out at all...  Is it physically possible to get your 4th and 5th finger to trill as fast and easily as your 2nd and 3rd fingers?  And if it is what do you need to do?  And is it really necassary?  Never really seen any reason why you couldn't use some other fingers.  Thanks any help would be appreciated!

I'm going to tack an additonal question onto musicman's question.  Is it really beneficial to trill with the fingering (for example) 2-3-1-3-2-3-1-3 (as opposed to 2-3-2-3)?  I have been told that when employed properly this method produces a deeper, more lush sound.  Is this the case, or is the additional fingering just 'showy' stuff for the virtuoso set?  ;)

yes it is possible. i thought the same thing but i used Hanon's Trill excersise i think its # 46 or 47 and that really helped. not just with those fingers but with making my left hand as equal as my right.  :)

Stral-

Try trilling 3-2-3-2-3-2-3 for as long as you can......you will get tired easily.  The 3-2-3-1-3-2-3-1-3-2-3-1 will allow you to last much longer.  It is called Thalburg's trill.

Bosendorfer:

Thanks a lot, you raise a good point.  All of the pieces I've played haven't relied heavily on long trills, so it has never been that much of an issue.  I'll have to practice this method, for sure.
