Wyman piano
on: June 10, 2005, 04:32:07 PM
I just purchased a Wyman baby grand piano (WG145).  It was on sale for $6100 and I talked the guy down and paid $5800 for it.  It's a fairly new name (Fall 2002), but it's made in China in a factory that has been producing pianos for 50 years.  I'm satisfied with the tone and feel, but I want to know if others have an opinion.  I've been playing about 9 months so I don't know much about pianos.  I'd appreciated any feedback, especially from a piano tech or someone who's had a lot of experience playing a lot of pianos.  Thanks.

I usually stop shopping and looking for information after I've purchased something...but that's just me.

Did you select this piano because it appealed to you the most of all the instruments you tried that fit into your budget.  If so, you got a great deal.  If you bought the piano because you thought it was the best $$$ deal and for no other reason, than you might want to go back to the drawing board.

Well, I think you answered your own concern.  It really doesn't matter what any tech, player, salesman, etc. thinks.  If you're going to enjoy the piano and it will motivated you to play it, then you have a fantastic instrument.

Fair Chinese piano. Lots of former Baldwin guys involved with this line.

Hope they do a better job with it than the soap queen did with Baldwin....

I guess I'll have to toot my own horn, ie, do my own investigating.  I had a very experienced, independent, well recommended tech come out to tune my Wyman grand  piano and he had nothing but great things to say about it.  Not to trash other brands...but there's a long Pearl River thread out there...the tech did not say anything good about Pearl River.  He said he even liked the Wyman piano over the Kawai GE series.  He said they're inexpensive b/c 1) they are made in China, 2) they don't have a local warehouse so that keeps overhead down and 3) it's a newer line so the company doesn't want to price themselves out of the market.  The tech said he looks for 3 things in a piano; sound, feel and looks.  His opinion was the Wyman grand piano has all 3.  The bottom line is I like it.  I'm just putting the info out there in case it helps someone else...it helped me.

Altenburg's in New Jersey has long had a house brand piano. At one time they built it themselves. More recently, their pianos have been built to their specs by Samick.

The new pianos will be built by Wyman.

Fred Altenburg is no dummy, and he's certainly no novice in the piano biz. You may be interested in this thread from Piano Facts:

Jolly, thanks for the reply and the thread...it was interesting and funny.  I did see a press release on the www.wymanpiano.com site concerning the partnership with Altenburg.  I love it when a good thing just gets better!  :)

You are most welcome. Fred is a very stand-up dealer.

(And he has the best AF prices in the U.S.)
