Generally speaking I find booze and music do not mix. However, one or two drinks when we have visitors don't seem to make a lot of difference - probably because my playing sounds shicker at the best of times.

God will punish us if we imbibe alcoholic spirits.

Sorry, just telling it like it is.

Of course, the listeners are probably just as bad off, and won't note the mistakes.

if they weren't tipsy, they had so many people that they ran out of it.  he made the next batch the best.

don't think that drinking is a problem.  it's what you do afterwards.  being that i have a 15 year old, i tell him to drink a beer or two at home and then go to bed (rather have him here).  don't go to a bar and then drive home and kill someone.

never really tried to see if i played better with beer or wine.  i think it would hinder your reflexes, but maybe after a couple of pints? (never drank pints myself) you don't notice and think you are playing wonderfully until you pass out on the bench and wake up an hour later with something you think is a fog horn blowing (the keys depressed on the piano - foot on the pedal).
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

And that's what God did to Jesus for drinking wine at Cana and for using wine at the Last Supper.

If you believe in the Old Testament, then we're all descendents of alcoholics (Noah and his sons were big-time wine guzzlers).  And a good percentage of the greatest composers were boozers (Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Sibelius .... to name a few).  Even J.S. Bach was into wine.

i homeschooled my kids for a few years, but we didn't get into fermentation in science.  when i was growing up, my parents decided to make beer.  they tried different recipies and one came out pretty good.  homemade beer and rootbeer are the best.  i don't know about wine.

btw - i think i had more fun in homeschooling than even my children.  we built a mousetrap car to race with other homeschool kids (my son was hs from 1-4th grade).  you use cd's for wheels, make it out of lightweight balsa wood, and glue a mousetrap on the top, which you pull back the spring (using a long dowel) and let it rip.

besides that, we went to individual art classes, had time for music, etc. etc.  my kids were really happy.  i put them in school and they became obsessed with tests.  i really like the public system otherwise in pennsylvania, though.  the teachers are great!  and, they go on lots of field trips, and do have fun.  i think whatever you do, do it with your might.  if you homeschool - do it the best you can.  if you go to public - don't let the little details make the big picture bad.  there's advantages to both.

Rachmaninoff and Bach were boozers ? I didn't know that. Of course many players in fields other than classical were heavy drinkers. Waller and Johnson were tremendous boozers and it says in my CD liner notes that Tatum drank so much beer he ended up with uraemic poisoning.

Hmm, my guitar playing seems to improve with a little alcohol, but my piano playing takes a dive.

And Budweiser?  God man, that ish is nasty.

Didn't Mussorgsky die from something like liver failure due to excessive drinking? The famous last painting of him shows him looking a little worse for wear due to alcohol.....binge drinking is really not good for you, i really should cut down....well i will after tonight  :)

I don't know abotu Bach, but Rachmaninoff was as far afrom an alcoholic as you could get. After his first symphony's failure, drank far too much, and swore off drinking after that. I think he did drink wine or whatever on occasion later on in life (not sure about this), but he certainly was not a heavy drinker.
