Something missing in my repertoire...
on: June 13, 2005, 03:19:51 AM
I need help, I can't find the perfect piece for me to play next, I just have a feeling that there's one piece that I'd want to play, but just haven't found it yet...Here's some of the pieces I play/am studying

-Bach Prelude C minor, D major, C sharp Major, all Bk 1
-Beethoven Pathetique Sonata (2,3 movements only)
-Grieg Sonata
-Chopin Black Key, F minor etude op.10
-Liszt Liebestraum
-Cathedral Englouttie
-Fantaisie Impromptu (polishing right hand)

Those are the ones that I keep playing I don't know why I really like each one...BUT I NEED ANOTHER, I'll stop playing a piece, then wait for several seconds, then realize that there should be another piece, but I don't have it yet... Any suggestions?  About that level nothing like Feux Follets or Scarbo plz..

Like what?  Well with exams I don't have time to 'start' a piece right now, umm op 9 no.2 I love to listen to, and I kinda fewled around with it..Would that be a piece that I could learn on my own?  Or is it too difficult...is it a longshot If I want to learn op 48 c minor?  I started performer's arct a couple months ago, and with the pieces i listed is it too difficult?  I also love that one..

It is an interesting program, about 70 minutes? ...  I think you could play a Gabriel Fauré Nocturne, the Nr 6 would fit your level, it is very passionate and intense, It will be appropriate after your Debbusy. But perhaps you have to play it instead of one of your pieces because of the time.

Good luck

O lol, no it's not all for one performance, It's just pieces that I have learned or am studying... I might have to drop one and switch because of the length (grieg), any sonatas ARCT level shorter than grieg but as dramatic and about same difficulty?  Thanks though, I'll check out the Fauré nocturne..

Not a bad idea... Diversifying time periods is good...  ;D

i'd say go with that op 9 no 2..its one of the more beautiful ones IMHO (dont care if its also one of the overplayed ones)...i just started this one a few day ago..those bass jumps feel great..its not too hard..i'v only been playing for 6 months..and it hasnt given me too much trouble thus far....but that 20th century idea also sounds nice

You could probably be a bit more ambitious among the Chopin nocturnes than Op.9 No.2 - charming though it is, it's perhaps slightly below the level of some of the other pieces you've named.  I half-learned the C minor nocturne Op.48 No.1 before my formal instruction in piano petered out a few years ago, and the final section is a bit chaotic; perhaps the F minor nocturne, Op.55 No.1 is a good middle ground?  Or, as has been suggested, move forward to the 20th century - find something accessible by, say, Prokofiev (some of the Visions fugitives perhaps), Rachmaninov (some of the preludes are reasonably accessible - Op.32 No.11 in B major leaps to mind), Shostakovich (some of the Preludes Op.34, or the Preludes from Op.87 - most of the fugues are rather more advanced than what you've listed).

Do Rach's Moments Musicaux Op.16 No.4  <---  the PRESTO.  Absolutely breathtaking.

Please stop suggesting Chopin, he already has two of his pieces on his list.

I strongly suggest the Barber ballade...it sounds and looks harder than it actually is, not too long, and very catchy to the listener!!!!!Or try one of Shostakovich preludes and fugues..they are underplayed and some are really terrific especially the last one.

The moment musicale looks pretty tough...ummm ya... I dl the sheet music for Nocturne op. 48 and IT's all good until the Doppio Moviment... (spelt wrong)...That's actually a reasonable piece, barber ballade, do you know where I could find a recording?  Same with the preludes/fugues you mentioned..

There is a wonderful two disk recording of the Shostakovich preludes and fugues from Naxos.com they actually let you preview all recordings on their website so I would try it out... lot of music to listen to. The last prelude and fugue are absolutely marvelous and considered a wonderful twentieth century work. I am currently working on it and the theme is just awsome.I don't know where to find a recording of Barber Ballade (I did not look yet though) but the music is in a Hal leonard book ( grey color)I think the name is something like works for piano by Barber. There are many other pieces in there such as Excursions which are also great but much harder.

Hey great news I found the recording of barber ballade on Naxos and it even has a sound clip even though not enough here is the information
Barber, Samuel: Ballade, Op. 46
-Pollack, piano
8.559015 BARBER: Solo Piano Music

I also discovered a wonderful thing just about all the solo pieces in that Hal Leonard book are on this disk so you could just look through the whole book and listen to music. You might even like some of the other pieces such as Nocturne and Excursions. Let me know If you will check it out . Best wishes

What about Brahms? Try his opus 79 Rhapsodies, and his Intermezzo's.
I dont play an instrument, I play the piano.

Ravel - Menuet Antique maybe? Thing is, it is quite a tricky piece so maybe not. It's beautiful though IMO.
