Scheduling Troubles
on: June 20, 2003, 01:31:58 AM
Hi All,

How do you handle the changes of seasons, i.e. summer and new school year schedule changes? My schedule is completely full. Now most students want to change and some want to keep their times, and it is all turning into a jumbled mess! Any and all advice will be very much appreciated!!

Kate

I note the lack of replies here - probably because we all have this problem, and there isn't a simple answer for it.  My husband teaches guitar, and has a lot more students than I do, so his problem in this area is even bigger than mine.  For students who have been with him a long time, and want to move to an earlier spot for the summer, but will want their old spot back when school starts, he puts an "x" in their old spot on his schedule, so as not to refill it.  Then he moves them back to the old spot when the time comes.  This isn't always workable, so you really have to just offer a first come first serve on your best time slots.

Kate,
That question is a very easy question for me.  I've learned (thru practice) that you need to keep your students at 1 timeslot and do your very best NOT to move them around.  When the school season starts, I just clearing state that if you stuck around with me during the summer, you get to pick your timeslot.  Once everyone who stayed during summer has picked their slot, then you let others in.  This makes the students/parents want to have summer lessons so they can secure their timeslot.  I sure hope this helps!!!

Best of luck in your teaching,
Ben
