Just the rach 2 a couple years ago.  I tried so hard to play that one with orchestra but I'm giving up with that one for now.

There was another piece by a Black American composer I played last quarter that was literally for orchestra and jazz piano so idk if that really counts.  It had two cadenzas and was only 8-9 minutes long.

Ah I see. Well good luck, hope you get to perform! You're probably way more ready to perform with an orchestra than you were when you were playing the Rach 2, and you're certainly more ready than I am!
Practicing:
Bach Chromatic Fantasie and Fugue
Beethoven Sonata Op. 10 No. 1
Shostakovich Preludes Op. 34
Scriabin Etude Op. 2 No. 1
Liszt Fantasie and Fugue on BACH

Thanks yo ima need it.

Surprisingly the third concerto is easier to play with accompaniment than the 2nd.  So far I've only done the first two movements with second piano and the only spot that's hard to coordinate is the waltz at the end of the second movement.

The second concerto has a few spots that can be quite confusing with with second piano especially in the middle of the second movement and the fugue in the last movement.

However playing with a large ensemble is WAY different than playing with two pianos.

I'll bet! Well let me know how that goes. I'm gonna take a potshot at the Paganini Rhapsody this summer, and see what I come away with ...

I did not follow the discussion.
I have always been troubled with the question why Richter only played the 2nd ,
As he played only Prokofiev 1 and 5.
Strange that the war beasts Rach 3 and prok 2 and 3 did not belong to his vast repertoire, far more vast than Horowitz or any other of his generation.
Rubinstein I think did not even touched the Russians.
But for a giant, perhaps THE greatest giant it is least you can say very remarkable.
I know he struggled once with a Shostakovitch prelude and fugue going to bed frustrated to come back strong.
He must have had his reasons.
Nonetheless, I already love him for his near 1 hour d.960 by Schubert. A first movement never played on another planet like him, playing all repeats in very slow tempo. It made Gould love Schubert after hearing Richter.

But at least, he was unique in not playing those warhorses everyone plays now. More as showcases than for the music, with exceptions of course.
Second to none is Ashkenazy, playing just about everything on a lonely level. True giant master. Much underrated to my sense.

Rach 3. I listen to it, but trying to play, I am Richter 😁

ALL MEMORIZED

It still sounds like sh*t though.

*** the last movement is WAY harder than the first two.

I talked to the president of the orchestra again and he said hes just waiting on the head conductor to give him the green light to put me in the program hopefully

orchestra people had a board meeting and said probably not next season but the one after that... :(

Everyone was on board except for the director and he gets the final say

Hey so I'm trying to get the starting tempo for the last movement up to speed.  I can do 160 pretty comfortably but is that too slow for it to be socially acceptable?

I think that sounds pretty good. I think most performances does it a little bit faster. With this concerto though, there are many bigger issues than tempo...

Major props for your public Rach3 quest!
I'm currently working on Mozart 20, got first orchestral rehearsal on Sunday. Thing is, I also have to play the organ part of Durufle Requiem in the rehearsal! It's not going as well as the Mozart, which itself is not ready yet.  :'(

Listened to a wee fragment from your dropbox recording, sounds good!

LAST MOVEMENT IS LOCKED AND LOADED AND READY TO GO

I played it through twice in my lesson today.  Once with orchestra part and once without.  Tbh I'm still making a lot of mistakes BUT everything is at full speed and I pass the absolute minimum speed limit that's socially acceptable so it's kind of presentable to an audience now.

Now the REAL challenge is playing it from beginning to end.  I'm gonna run through the whole thing for the first time with orchestra part in studio next week.  Which is the last studio of the school year so yeah going out with a bang lol.

Problem is...  NOW I FORGOT THE SECOND MOVEMENT

RAN THROUGH THE WHOLE THING FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!

A lot of memory slips...  BUT...  I found my way and did it without stopping

...
...
...

Holy *** it's a marathon.  More than anything else it's a mental challenge.  Like yeah technique and stuff whatever.  But concentration for that long and not having your memory fail you is like freaking impossible.

I DID IT!!!!

Played through the whole thing with accompaniment in studio today

I was NERVOUS AS ***!!!  And tbh I honestly though I was gonna have a huge memory lapse somewhere and not be able to recover.

BUT THAT DIDNT HAPPEN!!!  I had a ton of memory slips but I managed to recover enough to play through the whole damn thing.

I still didn't feel like the last movement was ready enough to play in studio so during the first two movements I couldn't stop thinking about how screwed I was in the last movement lol

Ima post a recording in the audition room when I get the chance.  Just a warning though it's pretty bad playing with pretty bad recording quality with pretty bad acoustics with pretty bad mic (phone) placement with ONE good piano.

I went on insta live and maybe the first two movements got posted on live then my phone turned off and I didn't have enough rest time to set it up again :(

BUT

The concert went super well.  When I'm not performing in front of a Jury or faculty or competition it's almost the same as me just playing it by myself.

I'm gonna take a break from it and play it for my graduating recital though so I'll record that one with legit recording equipment and post it to YouTube
