Of all these concerti mentioned, I’d say that Rachmaninov’s 3rd (why “Rach”? why can’t English speakers tolerate more than two-syllable words?) and Brahm’s 1st  have the most impressive endings of all. Grieg’s ending is very impressive and beautiful too, but those final orchestral chords are so distasteful that almost ruin the whole effect, imo of course.

Other concerti with impressive endings are Medtner’s 1st (like huge surges of waves rushing out), 2nd, (kind of like Rachmaninov’s in style) and 3rd concerti, Tovey’s, Ravel LH, Korngold LH, Scriabin, Liszt’s 2nd, Rachmaninov’s 4th, Panderecki, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky’s 2nd, Prokofiev's 3rd. These come readily to mind. I hate to say that R.Strauss’s Burleske has not an impressive ending, it is however a very effective one.

Rach 3 has a very memorable ending and I'd say it's my favourite, but there are plenty of other great endings.

Most impressive endings:

Brahms 1
Proko 3
Rach 3

many concerts have impressive endings - how about khatchaturian? (one of those laurel & hardy endings "bye!bye!bye!..." :) )

how about most unexpected endings? my vote goes to rachmaninov paganini rhapsody.

IF YOU'RE TYPING LOOKS LIKE THIS YOUR "CAPS-LOCK" KEY IS PROBABLY STUCK PRESS IT and suddenly people like you a lot more.

I'll say Tchaik 1 - the whole finale is explosive, it's more effective than that of the Rachmaninoff 3rd  (and it means something when someone with a screename of rach3 says that!). The Paganini rhapsody also has a neat ending, I agree with whoever said that.

We have nothing against multisyllabic words, I say/type "Rachmaninoff" all the time. The thing is, when we're talking about his works, cool people only refer to his d minor as Rach3. It's a style thing.

well theres lots of other piano concertos with impressive endings.
i voted for rach3, but i wanted to vote for rach 2 as well,  if i was given two options then i would have voted for both.  but its sad no one has voted for rach 2.  if i had known before hehe, i would have voted for that, because  deciding between rach3 and rach2 was just a random choice for me.

I think that the ending that is the most astonishingly effective and impressive in my opinion, is Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto  8). If you listen carefully and examine the score, the few minutes left of the music are in Molto Vivace tempo. It is impressive for me, the part before that is the same melody that is to come, but only louder, and even more expressive. The very low octaves, and the misterioso feeling of the beginning of the tempo. And the big ending, with the virtuoso movement of synchronized chords (common in Rachmaninoff's music) all give the fine ending go with this great piece. Usually, Beethoven's Concertos have great endings also. I believe that the ending in any music that is energic should be very well elaborated.

I voted for the Rach 3, but I also really enjoy the ending of the Prokofiev 1st concerto.  It's my favorite of the Prokofiev endings, I just love how the main theme returns, then the music goes up in pitch, builds tension and tension and tension, then it's all quickly exhaled by an emphatic chord from the brass.

This sums it up for me, too. And I'm such a sucker for octaves.  :)

Yeah, I love that ending too. It's very unexpected, and has a great effect which works well with that concerto.

For concertos in the common repertoire I love the ending to Gershwin's Concerto in G.

For concertos out of the common repertoire the Nyman always blows me away.

Anyone who's heard that ridiculous coda will surely agree.

Prokofiev used to brag that the prok 1 was an example of the TRUE sonata form.  Hence the recapitulating of the main theme.

LISZT NO. 2

The entire finale of it, in fact, which only goes for like a minute.

Otherwise, other great codas are Brahms 1, Rach 3, Liszt 1, Rach 2 and Tschaikovsky No. 1.
Fortune favours the musical.

Off the top of my head, Prokofiev No.3, Tchaikovsky No.1, Liszt No.1, Rachmaninov No.2, and Shostakovich No.2 (perhaps that last one is just me though).  And a nod in the direction of the Alkan Concerto for Solo Piano.

Definately  Prokofiev 2nd, the recapitulation of the 4th movement just hits you after the slow repeating chords on the piano at pianissimo.  Bound to make the audience jump!

As is usually the case with questions like these regarding a singular choice among a group of master-masterpeices, it is easy to say "They're all great"; however, if the question was modified to include specific performances, then I would be confident in selecting the entire 3rd movement from the live recording of Tchaikovsky's 1st in B Flat Minor performed by Horowitz with Toscanini conducting.  And the choice still isn't easy, even with the scope narrowed down as I'm passing on Rach performing his own compositions.
