MIDI only keyboard with great action?
on: June 24, 2005, 06:12:54 AM
Hey everyone,

I am looking for a MIDI only keyboard with realistic grand piano action. What I mean by MIDI only is that I do not need a synth built in. I only need a keyboard/digial piano with MIDI out since I use GarageBand and Ivory for my playback. However, I can't seem to find any pianos out there that are MIDI only with good action. I just played a couple digital pianos today and here is what I found:

Kawai C5/C7/C9 : Pretty good action and I really like the wooden keys. However, the sound was horrible compared to the Ivory VST. I mean leagues apart...

Yamaha PF500: OMG, I love this digital piano's action :) and the sound was pretty good.  But it costs about $2k and I am guessing most of that is because of the synth hardware.

This may be impossible, but has anyone come across a digital piano with action like a Yamaha PF500 but without the synth built in? Thanks.

I use the yamaha kx88 keyboard controller.  They don't make it any more, from what I understand, so you have to find a used one.  Think they go for about $400 if you can find one.  Disclaimer:  Its weighted keys meet my standards as far as action goes, but I'm such a novice that it might not meet anyone else's standards here.

Look at the yamaha p series. They're all supposed to have the same action although some people would disagree. For a midi controller, look at the p60, but for something with decent onboard sounds you should try the p90. The p120 is the p90 with onboard speakers.

Yep, I've got the P-60 and LOVE IT!  I've tried a ton of different controllers/stage pianos, the the Yamaha p series is the best IMHO.  I use the P-60 hooked up to Reason 3.0 and it's great.  I also think the onboard p-60 sounds are pretty darn good for a $500-$600 stage piano.
The piano is a monster that screams when you touch its teeth.
