Hate that piece
on: June 27, 2005, 07:37:33 PM
Do you guys ever get to a point sometimes when learning a piece that you actually start to really dislike it.  Recently i learned Bartok Allegro Barbaro and Prokofiev Montagues and Capulets, and while i really enjoy playing them both now they're down, there were points during them when i almost stopped because i wasn't enjoying them.  Partly i think this is because they were both chosen by my teacher as an excursion into more modern music and i didn't actually like either on first listen through (especially Allegro Barbaro, and the development in the Prokofiev, love the slow bit though and of course the main theme).  Do you guys ever get that though?

I would have thought that a lot of people on this forum have experienced this. I find that if i am learing something of extreme difficulty and keep having to go over and over certain passages, it almost ceases to become music.

However, it's all worth it in the end.

I have that problem at times. Just keep at it and it seems to get better.

Yup that happened to me with the Bach Prelude no.2 from book 1.

The opposite happened with the fugue though!

Gotta agree with BoliverAllmon, with time it gets better especially if u leave it and play something else for a few days (or even weeks).
I wish i was what i was when i wanted to be who i am now.

Well, it actually just happened to me a few weeks ago. I had become so enthralled by the opera "Norma," and was looking for a huge, epic piece of my own to master over a few months and perform as a somewhat rare closer for a recital, I, well, went right after the Liszt/Bellini paraphrase piece. Obviously, as is expected in the context of the thread, I quickly developed an acute dislike of the piece for some reason, and even though I had no real trouble playing it (through the march section) at a reasonable tempo, I just couldn't go on.

Fortunately, it didn't take long to find a subsitute, one that I have wanted to play for much longer: the Liszt/Wagner "Tannhauser" Overture. So far, after about three weeks, I still love the piece, perhaps now more than ever!

It's definitely a good feeling to finally find a certain piece to which you realise you have a great affinity, and for which, a great love.

Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto -- I loved it enough to play and memorize it, but then I developed an intense dislike of it .......... (not sure why, though)

learning prokofiev's 3rd sonata right now... it sounds awful when played slow (the fast parts)...but it'll be worth it up to tempo.
