"Black Key" Etude and Etude Opus 10 No 1
on: June 30, 2005, 12:59:52 AM
Hi! I'm now playing Fantasie Impromptu (which for me is about a 5 in difficulty on a scale of 1 to 10) , and I was wondering whether I could use either the black key etude  (Opus 10, No 5) or Etude Opus 10, No 1 for my next piece, or whether they would be too difficult. Thanks!

10-1 is quite a challange but since you should be capable of both... lets play that one. :D

Giving the FI as youre curriculum vitae is not very helpful for us to suggest what to learn next (as I'm sure you've seen ad nauseum on other threads).  If you have large hands, go for the 10/1, as I found it rather easy because of this reason, while the 10/5 has given me enough trouble with fingering to stave me off for a while.  But why limit yourself to these two?  I much more respect the leser known ones (and tastes of people who choose to play them instead) such as 25/7, 25/5, and 10/7.

Try the A minor with the huge 'ragtime' (sorry but it kinda is) jumps in the left hand...sounds pretty neat but I wouldn't be able to play it..

I would go with the first one, it sounds great, and it is a great etude. But since you said you are practicing the Fantasie-Impromptu, the Op. 10 No. 5 ("Black Key") would be helpful for a better interpretation and technique of the own Fantasie-Impromptu, because of the perfect legato that must be achieved, different touches and positions, and strength given to the weaker fingers.
But I would personally go with the first one, it is one of my favorites. Great for large streches.  ;)

what is that about. Ragtime? Horrible.

Couldn't you just learn both...?

Sorry, I know it's like nothing like ragtime, but I find the left hand jumps similar to most left hand music in ragtime, I just think the left hand is kinda like ragtime but much harder, sry lol.

Hold on, guys. There's another factor which I just realized the implications of. I would like to perfect either one of these pieces by the end of July. However, I will be leaving for vacation on July 4 and will be returning on July 13. I've already learned the first page of 10/5 HS slightly under tempo after about 3 days. Do you think I have a chance of finishing it by the end of July?

Go for etude op. 10 nr. 5, I played it and it's fun  ;D I think it sounds more fun than op. 10 nr. 1  :D

It's by far easier, it's bouncy too :o :o.  If ur in a rush then pick the one that you find easier to get a grasp of...
