Piano arrangements of national anthems
on: July 01, 2005, 11:38:36 AM
Seeings it's the time of the year for the Canada and US birthdays, have you made your own piano arragnements of a national anthem?  Have you played arrangments by others that you particularly liked?  Have you notated your arrangement, and like to share?

I have been asked to play the Canadian anthem numerous times during ceremonies, and my arrangement has never remained static.  I always feel I need to tweak it more.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

This was supposed to be in Performance, I don't know how it ended up here.  Can a moderator move it please.

my husband had a friend write a version that was transposed to his voice range.  he added a lot of bass and it sounded nice.  it's just hand written, though, and kind of hard to read.

here's a site that has many national anthems from around the world:

do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

Now that you mention it, I need to jump on the Sousa-Horowitz Stars and Stripes Forever (not an anthem but patriotic enough) for the 4th!

Louis Moreau Gottschalk wrote several “paraphrases” of National anthems.

You may find this interesting:

(how a composer can infuriate everyone with his arrangements of National anthems ;D)

Best wishes,

Wibi Soerjadi (sp?) wrote one for the Netherlands and an American paraphrase. both are real cool.

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
