Do any piano transcriptions of Mahler exist?
on: July 03, 2005, 04:45:53 AM
I was just thinking about how some of the movements might sound on piano, like the scherzo from the 7th (virtuosic!). Obviously there are no great transcriptions (Liszt was already dead...) but it would be quite fun if there was at least something.

Does any transcription exist?

Pianist John Bell Young transcribed the Adagietto from Mahler's 5th. There is an audio sample on his website, https://www.johnbellyoung.com/core.html, where you can also order the sheet music.

John Young ... years and years ago, he had master classes on mp3.com when it was actually mp3.com.  Always liked listening to those.

The Mahler fairy? Is that the one that flies around on Cziffra's bumblebee?  ;)

Incidentally, I just noticed this exact thread already was written three years ago (page 52 in the Repertoire archives):

Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
