Piano Technician's car
on: July 05, 2005, 04:57:55 PM
Well, it's just about time for a new car. Since professional image has a lot to do with continued success, my question has to do with image...

In your opinion, what kind of car do you picture your tuner driving up in???

I should mention that I am willing to spend up to the 50-60 K range if necessary, but something inside me doubts it is necessary.

I should also mention that If I am performing restorative work on an piano, I use a truck and trailer, the most I would need to put in my car is a piano action (easily fits into my current copact car)

Is a sports car the wrong image? Personally I would love an Imprezza Wrx Sti, My only concern is that because I am only 24 this car would look too youthful in the "sometimes snobby" local piano world around my parts.

comments?

to me, what's impressive is all the stuff tuners bring in your house.  also, how they tune and what condition they leave your piano and room in.  also, some tuners are very efficient in how they tune pianos and are not very obtrusive, whereas others make a show of it.  if you have a floor runner, it's nice.  and, like a doctor, leave a card (in case person needs to get hold of you).  you probably already do this stuff.  it's just nice when someone takes the time to explain afterwards what they needed to do (or writes it down) and that the charges are understood.

suppose that the color of your car (or style) is probably as important as a brown or black piano to pianists.  strictly a matter of personal taste.  clients probably don't even look out the window, but see you at the door.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

An Imprezza is fine.  Great car, too.  Go for it!  I can't imagine anyone would object -- it's a Subaru, for god's sake!  Sure the Imprezza is a sporty Subu, but it's still a Subu.  You know the Subu image...highly reliable, practical, all-wheel drive, goes in any weather, a little quirky.  Sounds like the ideal image for a technician!

I think a mini van might look very professional.  Maybe advertise on the side too.  I would think a piano technician might have a lot of tools to carry around or even might move an upright around in one.

If I saw an expensive sportscar, I would wonder if I was overpaying the technician.  Or it could be a technician for top notch world class pianists.  I would think the guy must know what he's doing -- he makes enough money to put it into a sportscar!

Yeah, I don't think anyone would forget the piano tech that showed up driving the batmobile.

"Boy! He got here fast!"

"Oh, enough with the 'I'm Batman! I'm Batman!' nonsense!  Just tune the darn piano already."

Listen, no one will ever criticize you for getting a WRX.  I've never ever heard of that before--people who drive them are always seen as intelligent and dedicated to excellence.

Well..I don't mean to shut you out...(thanks Thalberg)

Here's what I have driven as of yet...

new Mazda 3- okay, but kind of cheap feeling..

03 Caddilac CTS (I can't even remember if it was 6 or 8 cyl.) It was nice, but had a crappy interior.

New Accord Hybrid (really cool and powerful, nice interior, but I guess I thought it was overpriced for what you really end up with)

THree volvos (liked them all)

New Toyota Corolla- liked it a lot, but would only want the XRS (but the XRS does not have a folding rear seat) so that means it's a no-go

I really like Nissan Sentra Spec-V's but they are soo sooo sooooooo ugly.

haven't driven the Subaru, but you don't have to (it's an awesome car)

I like the Maybach idea....but I can't afford a Chauffeur... :-[ :P

As for the Pagani...I've got GT3

my friend just got a '04 cadillac deville... nice car. extravagant.  :P i thought it was amusing when he pulled up and got out wearing a shirt that read "dunce". haha.

on the side, my piano technician drives an suv... don't know what kind, but it's nice. i like to consider it professional... heh, but what do i know? doesn't look stuck up if they've got a nice car... now my friend with the caddy... that's another story...

good luck finding a car.

The piano car (for the pianists, and piano technicians):

Starting the piano... woops err... car
1) Has 88 different keys.
2) Each key has to be tuned correctly before it can be used.
3) For greater security, a ChordTM security system is implemented, where 3 specific keys must be used. An optional Chord7thTM or Sus4TM upgrade can be purchased, allowing for a maximum of 4 keys.

Characteristics of the Car
1) There are 3 pedals. The right one sustains the car's current speed. The middle pedal, depending on model, allows the driver to sustain different speeds SIMULTANEOUSLY! (PianoCar hereby declares that any injury, fatal or non fatal, caused to the driver during the operation of the PianoCar shall not be held liable by PianoCar, or its subsidiaries) or muffles the engine noise,  and the left pedal shifts the engine slightly to the side.
2) the car has a sharp bend on the right side of the body.
3) commonly black in colour. Rare models come in white, or brown.
4) bonnet opens sideways.

Don't get an SUV unless your job involves a lot of off-road work...oh yeah, piano technician, not field biologist...don't get an SUV. Think about the environment.

No, not a whole lot of off-road work, I don't want to put gas in a SUV anyways.

So, the nexy question, what is a better car,

Acura TL or a Infiniti G35

Well, having testdriven both of them, I much prefer the TL.  It is a mush more responsive car, although the G35 has slightly more room.

Poems of Ecstasy – Scriabin’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

The great early 20th-century composer Alexander Scriabin left us 74 published opuses, and several unpublished manuscripts, mainly from his teenage years – when he would never go to bed without first putting a copy of Chopin’s music under his pillow. All of these scores (220 pieces in total) can now be found on Piano Street’s Scriabin page. Read more
