Bob observes....

There are two ways to cross your legs -- leg all the way over leg where the theighs are crossed, and having your ankle to the knee where one leg is tilted to the side.

I noticed several male piano teachers crossing their legs "leg-over-leg" (the way many women would cross their legs).

The only guys I've ever seen do this were male piano teachers.

Has anyone else noticed this?

A few other people I've talked to have mentioned this -- their male piano teachers will sit this way, but no other males they know.

Any thoughts?

yes, this probably avoids the problem previously discussed on other thread about sex.  it minimizes the pop-ups (imagines this).  this same teacher probably avoids the ti-te method of counting, too.  in fact, this teacher is probably the serious type.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

Huh?

Yes, serious, but what do you mean pianonut?  I don't understand.

Pianonut, I'd love an explanation.  I totally don't understand what you said but it sounds really intriguing!

I don't cross my legs (I'm a male piano teacher) and neither did any of my male piano teachers.  It seems so strange to me that you all would think this.  Oh, well, it makes for good reading.

BOB, WHY ARE YOU IN STEALTH MODE?

You can't see me... I'm not here.... I'm invisible....

Not all male piano teachers, but they're the only ones I've seen do this in music.

I'm male but not a teacher. My usual crossed leg position is at the ankle with legs stretched out but this evidently doesn't count. I use the other two ways rarely mostly just sitting with legs uncrossed.

Leg over leg looks cooler

Because it reminds me of Don Corleone from The Godfather
Fortune favours the musical.

haha.  bob, your threads are the ones that get me in the most trouble.  they start out so sincere and end up with all kinds of answers.  first i must start out sincerely answering your question - as in the past i have had some questions like this too, but too scared to ask.

i have a little nephew who is a joy to my heart, but he does not fit the macho man kid.  he is skinny, tall, and really fun to be with.  he likes music, dance, and is currently learning celtic dancing.  he's really good.  he's very sensitive. and, he's extremely smart (brag brag)  kids tend to tease guys like this because they want them to fit the mold of what they think a guy should do or be like.

over time, i have realized that society does place a huge strain on guys (and girls) to be or do exact behaviors whereas a range of things may be more comfortable to one than another.  ps. my nephew happens not to be gay, but many musicians and dancers probably are as skeptotamus said.

anyway, if you happen upon a gay teacher - they will probably give you some of the best instruction in piano and you will not be wondering or fearing them.  i never ask, and really don't care.  just because i have a different belief system doesn't mean that i wouldn't appreciate what they have to teach.  if they add crossing of legs, or exhibit some characteristic thought of as female, they are pegged.  now, i'm not even curious.  i think, if they are - that's their business and if they're not - too bad they're not married because they have a lot to offer - but maybe they're happy being alone.

I have noticed this too. I even caught myself doing it once. No clue why I did it.
