We're getting a grand piano!!!!
on: July 10, 2005, 10:32:54 PM
When my parents told me they've decided to get a grand piano for our home (for both mine and my father's benefit) I about died.

I still can't believe I'm really awake and not dreaming.

That's marvelous!!  You'll find yourself practicing more frequently and longer, and you'll enjoy it and feel so inspired.  It will ennoble you and improve your playing.  Congrats!  What kind and what size?  And what color?

we're not sure yet. Me and my Dad checked out a really nice 7' Nordiska, but we're going to go to anotehr store and look at some Yamahas, Young Changs, Baldwins, Kawais, and others.

WE're most likely going to get a 7 footer....oooohh the SOUND they make

oh and most likely black. I was gonna get satin but a friend noted the advantages of having a shiny piano and being able to see the reflection of your fingers and so forth.

Derek, I created a thread about satin versus shiney.  It's called "the black piano thread" and it's under "miscellaneous."  Go ahead and read it.  It's  lighthearted and sort of funny, but you may gain some insight.

Please do yourself a favour and not buy a Young Chang.

Please.

The high gloss finish is also easier to clean.  Satin and Matte finishes are difficult because "finger oils" tend to penetrate more easily into the finish, making it more difficult to clean.

awesome, Derek. 7 ft.?! damn... that's a lot of piano for a home. lucky you.  8) i advocate yamahas... ;) so far any yamaha, studio or grand,  i've played on has been great. *whispers* go for satin finish... shiny black gets scratchy circle type marks all over... mild soap can remove finger prints on a satin finish.... post a picture when you get your piano!! please.

That's great for you.  I got a baby-grand about two years ago, but it's dreadful, it's a Yamaha A1, and I'm replacing it soon with a good upright.  It just proves that a good upright is much better than a small grand, I only got it because it was a grand.

And 7 feet!?!?  Lucky you, mine is only 4 feet!

I think in general, the Yamaha is the safest bet...if you can afford it, then go for it!!!

That is so exciting, you will love it so much.  The inspiration factor is so amazing, when I practice on the grand at school I feel so much better and I play for hours more than normal.  Can't wait for you,
