Pop and Classical
on: July 13, 2005, 04:56:18 AM
Hi guys, I was just watching a movie called Sister Act 2 the other day, and saw the choir of the St. Francis school perform a jazz and pop music rendition of Beethoven's song ' Joyful Joyful We Adore Thee .." (sorry, don't know the title). Okay, I'm sure you guys remember that part, they all sang in the competition and won first place, happy ending etc.. Even though Beethoven would hate the idea of his music turned into a pop tune (in a church!), it sounded pretty good to me. I was just wondering whether you guys like or hate the idea of mixing classical music with a pop or jazz rhythm ? I think its pretty cool, if it appeals to many youth today who love rock music and think classical is well, boring, old fashioned etc.. . Of course, I love the classics but I really would like to learn to play a jazz version of that tune (forgive me!) just for fun. I wonder if this topic has been discussed before, but I just wanted to know how others, especially classical trained musicians feel about this?

well... i dunno... its kinda unoriginal, because you're just using material that you didn't come up with. but yes, it gives a new fresh makeover, which might appeal to the newer generations "like myself"... but i'm still a classical person...
Listening to Maksim... well its nice, but that's all. doesn't stick with me.
I guess somehow or another we have to try and revitalise the music, and push it in a new direction...
think about it ... it took a century for music to progress from baroque styles to classical styles, classical to romantic, romantic to 20th century, and now we're at pop. (admittedly, 20th century music didn't last as long as the previous genres, thanks to Gershwin). Though, we're kinda overdue for a new push...
