General Audition Repertoire
on: July 14, 2005, 08:16:44 PM
Is it really that bad to have a good, solid program of often played pieces for conservatory auditions? I've been working on some of my pieces for auditions for a while, and I feel a little bit disheartened after reading some of the posts in this section.  I'm going to be playing:
Bach Prelude and Fugue G Minor Book I
Beethoven Waldstein Sonata (All 3 mvts)
Scriabin D sharp minor Etude
Chopin Scherzo No. 1
Francois Morel Etude De Sonorite No. 2
These recommendations were given from two teachers who have both studied at Eastman/Julliard.  What do you guys think?

That's a fine list for auditions.

F*CK anyone who bashes you for it.

I did well with.......

Bach prelude and fugue no 3 in c sharp major
Beethoven op 10 no 1
Schubert impromptu in E flat major
George Crumb dream images (love and death music)
Chopin Ocean Etude

They don't require an underground or such a demanding audition repitoire....just that you play well.

Your prelude and fugue is very good for auditions. It is not done too often and is very difficult.

You should be worried about your Beethoven Sonata and Scherzo, for they are both played by about every other person. The real reason the Waldstein is not a good piece for auditions is because it doesn't show off anything. They ask for it, you play some chords and a couple scales, then you're done.

The Etude is fine because I doubt anyone else will be playing it.

I love the Scriabin Etude Op. 8 #12 and the Morel Etude #2 (don't run out of steam at the end though, that ending needs to be in-your-face).

How would this be for an audition:
Beethoven op 10 no.1
Chopin Ballade G minor
Bach Prelude and Fugue in Bflat BWV 866
Mozart twinkle-twinkle variations
Rachmaninov Preludes op 13(I think) no.s 5 and 10
You either do or do not. There is no try- Yoda

Life is like a piano, what you get out of it depends on how you play it

Well, um, the Ballade is good. You also might want to check out the opus number for those rachmaninoff preludes, considering the preludes are op. 23 and 32....

(would I need to do a bigger sonata, say something like Les Adieux?)

I would not change anything.
In my opinion both of you, and Ravelmaniac and jehangircama, have good programmes.

good luck!!!
