A tie between The Piano and The Piano Teacher.

What about u?
The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

Definitely The Pianist, although I loved Shine too. Wasn't too impressed with The Piano, i was deeply shcked when the woman's finger was cut off at the end! I was like "noooo" then it had a fairly happy ending i guess.

I really want to see the piano teacher, what's it like? I've seen the book on Amazon so thinking of reading that first.

Anyone seen "Truly, Madly, Deeply"? With Alan Rickman - Jamie (he plays the cellist) and his girlfriend Nina (Juliet Stevenson). It is one of my favourite films, it's one of the only films i've ever truly cried at   :'(. I literally cried for about an hour solid during the film, great release if you've had a bad day lol!

The bit that always sets me off is when Nina sits at the piano and plays the piano part alone to Bach's 3rd Cello concerto (2nd movement - one of my favourite sonatas ever). It is so sad because in her head she imagines Jamie (her recently deceased boyfriend) playing the cello part, before realising he is actually playing it in the room with her again (his ghost....well it is an ambiguous plot because you can't tell whether Jamie is a ghost or if Nina has simply gone mad due to her intense grief and imagines he has come back to her).

Watch it if you come across it (it's a British film from 1991), kinda music related i guess, but more a tragic love story. I've wanted to date a cellist ever since.   ::)

Try renting "Impromptu"--a funny movie abut Chopin and George Sand, with a lot of beautiful piano music.

I saw a movie in Blockbuster today, it was an Asian foreign film called "PianoMan" or something.  Anyways, the tagline was "Musician by day, MONSTER by night....."
Seemed interesting, but I was already getting American Psycho and Yossi & Jagger.

perpaps you will regret asking, but its about a masochistic woman (the piano teacher), who by day teaches piano, and by night cuts up her own genitals, gets raped, urinates next to cars, gets raped(seems like she wanted it), watches pornography in a public booth while sniffing tissues covered in semen, and attempts to rape her own mother.

all in all, a good family movie  ;)

i half-enjoyed it, but its more about this woman's wierdness than music and the piano.

my favourite scenes are those with liszt in, where he plays mazeppa, and sight reads some chopin etudes.

I love Shine, you can't really not like it. My other favourite film of all time - unrelated to Shine (but similar title)  is "The Shining".... :) Always find Jack Nicholson really attractive in that (apart from the whole murder thing lol) he is one of my favourite actors of all time. Anyone seen the documentary of the Shining on the DVD by Vivian Kubrick?

I haven't seen The Pianist, but I like all the others (though The Piano Teacher isn't something I'd like to see again... and I didn't like the music, only the song they practised for a concert). I chose The Piano, because Hunter plays herself, which I found extremely appealing. I liked her playing. It's been years since I've seen it, though. Beautiful movie with exciting colours and great acting.

I didn't choose Shine, because Helfgott is not really a virtuoso, is he? I have one of his recordings somewhere, maybe I should find it. It's a lovely movie, anyway. The family was pretty angry afterwards?

I also liked 1900. When we got out of the movie theatre my friend said "oh, it was so American and dumbly emotional, it irritated me". Sigh. I wish she understood automatic criticizing of traditional sentimentality doesn't equal higher level of awareness. The guy was really sad about his friend, ok?

I read the book 'The piano teacher' (Elfriede Jelinek). I don't know how the film is but the book isn't really about piano playing...

a man, who works in the engine of this big ship finds a baby one day, and decides to name him after the year he was born (1900), the boy grows up and somehow learns to play the piano, although we are never showed how(i guess we are supposed to assume he learnt it himself).
so this legendary pianist(he plays jazz), who grew up on a ship, has the opportunity to leave the ship and become a famous pianist, but the ship is his home and has always been his home...he never leaves.

i recommend it, especially for the duel scene where he competes against the no1 jazz pianist in the world, and slaughters him.

the famous pianist lights a cigarette and puts it on the piano, and plays the whole piece before the cigarette burns out.
1900 takes a cigarette and doesnt light it, puts it on the piano, and plays an impossibly virtuosic piece(its obviously a 4 hand piece) and then stops, stands, and places the cigarette on the piano strings and it lights, he then goes over the the famous pianist (who had mocked him and refused to shake 1900s hand) and puts the cigarette in the pianists mouth saying 'you smoke it, i dont know how'

its a really good movie

Has anyone watched this? Any thoughts? It's an anime cartoon (10 episodes). I'm wondering if it's worth getting.

Synopsis: Miu Nomura is a 14-year-old 8th-grader who has been playing piano since early childhood. As a little girl, the music made her heart soar and she eagerly shared her songs with all of those around her. Now an introverted teenager, Miu has become too shy to express her feelings – even through her music. Her playing has suffered and her piano teacher, the moody Mr. Shirakawa, has become impatient with her inability to reach the next level. Miu grows up gradually while her friendship, kinship, and love affairs evolve around her, but those relationships inevitably affect her piano performance.
