College
on: July 20, 2005, 04:12:10 PM
Hi.
I'm wondering how realistic my goals about pianolaying are. My intentions are to go to a college and become some kind of pianoplayer (at balletcourses or auditions or perhaps at performances).
But how long time does it generally take - from scratch - to have achieved a repertoire that you can use for a college audition. I myself am not a complete rookie, but if you were, how long would it take to be able to get in to collegeaudition, and be able to do well. A bit funny question perhaps, but I don't know anything of the amount of time we are talking about here. Have a blast /lisztener

What level of college? I know of colleges that require Gr.8 RCM, which isn't difficult. If I had an adult student who was willing to commit to practicing for two hours a day I think that that level could be achieved in one year. If the student had talent I could probably measure the time in weeks.
But if we're talking about Chopin Etude, late Beethoven Sonata, Obscure 20th century work - type auditions it would take considerably more time.

I agree it all depends on the school. If it is a small community college, you just have to know where middle C is basically.

Where do you find out which level is required for each school? At websites?

or call them. If the school is a bigger uni the website is the best bet.

I was playing pop music a lot, then decided that I wanted to master classical music.
I practiced dilligently for about 2 hours a day, then passed my gr. 10 2 years later. I should have my Arct in another year. (things take so long with all of the co-reqs) So to answer your question, 2 years sounds about right if you take it seriously and spend a lot of time practicing sight to make up for lost time.
As for mastering, the piano, I think I've given up on that....
the closer and closer I get, the more I realize that ARCT is really just the beginning.
