LRSM Recital Programme?
on: July 21, 2005, 10:24:43 AM
Hi guys, another brain teaser for you all! I have decided to spend a year working on an LRSM diploma from scratch. I have quite a lot of LR rep but I want to take this year to spread out and consolidate before taking an FR and maybe doing an MMus MA. The recital has to be 40 mins - 45 mins max and include any breaks (not sure i really want them in this length recital). Please give your thougths on this repertoire. As i said on another post the difficulty is that is MUST be balanced (different genres) but within 45 mins this can get a bit chopped up. I definately want a classical sonata and my teacher recommends Haydn Eb/52 as i have done Beethoven and Mozart but only one other sonata of Haydn. Anyway heres my programme:

Haydn: Eb/52 Sonata
Debussy: Soiree dans Grenade (from Estampes) - not new
Mendelssohn: Variations Serieuses

Think this comes to about 36 mins playing time if this is too short i could add either Harmonies du soir or Un Sospiro or something similar.
Thanks guys

Instead of doing Un Sospiro, do a Bach P&F.

Hello pianowelsh.
I am also working towards a similar diploma, Trinity's LTCL.
It has the same time limit. around 40 minutes

Here's what im doing:

Haydn Eflat Sonata /52
Chopin Scherzo No.2
Liszt: Chapel of William Tell AND The Bells of Geneva from Suisse
Prokofiev: Dance of Girls with Lillies AND Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet

I did consider the Variations Serieuses to replace the Scherzo but i decided i'll go with the Scherzo, partly because i am the ultimate Chopin fan.

Yes, and i would also suggest a Bach Prelude and Fugue. I might even replace one of the Liszt pieces for one myself.

Other than that i think we're both along the same line of repertoire choices.
Good Luck

The difficulty i find is the problem of not having too many flavours on the one plate tso to speak. Its really quite a short recital and i am worried it could be a bit bitty if i include too many short pieces?! I am considering dropping the Mendelssohn for now and replacing it with the whole of Estampes (learnt it before) and inserting another piece maybe a p&fg maybe a romantic work circ 10mins? I think i ll save Mendelssohn for another longer recital? What do you guys think?

I like this program better. I'm preparing for the LR in singing this year. My previous experience in the Dip was that the examiners really disliked disjuncted itty bitty programs and they also disliked programs that lacked variety. My friend almost failed her Dip 2 years ago because of those 2 factors. I think your current program is great. A P&F, Haydn then Estampes. It'll be lovely. Good luck!

I have an afterthought. A romantic piece will also be nice. The choice will be up to you. What are your strengths? Are you a strong Bach player or are you a more passionate type who do Romantic pieces well? Stick with what you're good at.

Great to hear about the good news of you and your friend. Yes, I can see an all Liszt program being coherent and interesting.

I am thinking about doing an LRSM.  I would do:

Chopin Ballade no. 4
Liszt: Any concert Etude
Beethoven: Tempest Sonata, or Appasionata (not sure if that is still on the list)
And Bach C minor Partita

There is a huge choice on the LRSM list, I find it hard to decide. I can already play a large selection so I'm just going to decide out of them.

that would be a nice programme. why not add a post romantic piece as well. then you'd have baroque, classical, romantic and post-romantic. but that still is a good programme. best of luck
