Perhaps you're right then.  I should just feign sympathy and pretend to be serious, so that way my image isn't tarnished.

I didn't really think it was very funny.  It's just making fun of someone who doesn't understand the language.  Then they're kids.  And it looks like U.S. military is posing and taking the picture which seems stupid considering the previous round of picture taken like that.

Seems sad.  I've heard the stress of being there can alter the way your view of what's normal and acceptable.

I think you are all missing the point of the photograph.  It seems to be a statement against the U.S. military's treatment of civilians in Iraq....

It's presented a humorous, sarcastic way, becuase sometimes that's the only way to reach a certain group of people.  Now of course you wouldn't see this on CNN or something, (as it's certainly not politically correct) but there is a large portion of society who can only be reached and affected when you aren't trying to be serious.  Think of shows like the Simpsons and Family Guy for example - those kind of people are who this photo is meant to mean something.

It's not trying to glorify raping and pillaging - it's trying to show the hypocrital, bad side of it.

While I understood the photo in it's correct light, Boliver I think it was probably not a good idea to post this here (as it seems most appear to be more of the "CNN" type if you know what I mean.)

Why, I believe it has a personality.

Anways, I didn't say you were feigning anything.  You like to jump to conclusions, don't you!

Furthermore, how do you know I don't have relatives in the military?  Not to mention close friends of mine.  I know full well what it feels like to have loved ones in an unessesary war...  but unlike you I won't use that as a pretense to try and make others feel guilty.

That's why I said he shouldn't have posted it.  Becuase most people here will interpret in the way its not meant to be interpreted.  You have to know your audience.

Well, okay.  I will admit I did not think all the way through it when I initially got offended.   The photo is a little shocking, one must admit.

I feel inclined to resent the comment of being the CNN type... LOL.  Actually I am not even sure what is the "CNN", it is a news ?  hmmmm..... I guess we are passionate people

I'm sorry, m1469.  I didn't mean to say that you actually watch CNN or have no sense of humor.  I guess I'm just trying to say that it could easily offend people who aren't used to that sort of sarcasm.

Well, this is just a touchy subject for a lot of people.  The thing is, many people have *ideas* about what should be going over there, but really there are very few actual *answers*.  And many people are involved directly or indirectly, so it is easy to fall into turmoil over things such as this.

Sometimes, he he, I wonder to myself ... "if I can't even get along with myself and my acquaintances, how do I expect entire nations to live in peace ?"

Anyway, apology accepted, Nightscape.  Thanks.

Now, allow me to post my own analysis of the picture as it intends to convey it's message.  This is my own subjective interpretation, and is up for speculation of course.

When I first viewed the picture, I immediately had a sense of confusion.  Everyone appears to be smiling, however they are situated in a pile of rubble, and the sign the young boy is holding says some nasty things on it.

This juxtaposition of positive and negative is symbolic of hypocrisy.  But who is hypocritical here?  Is it the boy, whose family has been destroyed, yet is still smiling?  This would suggest the boy is betraying his own emotions.  It also suggests that possibly the sign is a lie and nothing like that really happened to the boy.  Or is the soldier hypocritical?  If the sign is right, that he did do those awful things under a pretense to liberate and help the boy, then the soldier is certainly hypocritical.

Regardless of it all, it is quite obvious this photograph is staged - probably the soldier wrote the sign himself and had tricked the boy (who probably can't read English) into holding it and posing for a photograph, thinking the whole thing was quite hilarious.  Or perhaps this photograph wasn't taken anywhere near Iraq, and everyone in the photo is some sort of actor?  It's really irrelevant because the message of the photo is hypocrisy - that the very force who came to liberate lied, and really caused more harm than good.

So this is the message of the picture - whether or not you agree is up to you.

here's a picture for analysis

a rain forest

lots of trees

men dressed like gorrillaz walking

the picture is from behind

they are dirty

one man has a dead baby tied by the neck hanging over his back

the baby is of a different ethnicity of the men

----------------------------------------------------

here there is a bit of shock value

the fact the picture is given in words means that our minds wont assemble the image in its entirety

but create similar pieces to the image

many people will perceive it differently

there is anticipation as the scene builds

but meaning is mostly the same

however if this were a real picture

there would be many more interpretations

because what  each person sees first is not the same and what we see cant always be described with words

shocking, abhorrible, barbarous -these words dont do a real picture justice

we are not guided as we are with words

some may not even see baby

some may think it an animals of sorts

.....

guess im trying to say

a picture cant be summed up with a word

or placing it into words

or something

forgot

no can think strait

thank you. I didnt mean to enrage some people. People deal with stress in different ways. Some make fun of it and I think this is what the picture is. Making fun of the war and the US military.

It seems on the level of making fun of a retarded kid.

Then you add the military uniform and figure out they're in Iraq.  Makes the US look bad.  I'm sure the kids had it hard enough and now someone sticks a sign in their hands a dumb joke.  Might get a small laugh, but the impact on the people that hate having the US there could be more than the laugh.  Not worth it.

I imagine anything dealing with Iraq and the US military would cause controversy.  Imagine if a soldier were over there playing Shostakovich.  People would argue about that.
