Awkward situations
on: July 23, 2005, 08:33:26 AM
Considering the heavy number of "serious" posts in this section I thought we could try something different - say, share stories of awkward or embarresing moments in our lives.

I'm going through one right now (at 3:00 am in fact).  It's kind of a complicated story....

Anyways, it starts in the late afternoon.  My, my brother and sister, and my mother are all at a friend's house, swimming in her pool.  Everyone is in a good mood, and we're all having fun.  My mom even agrees to little my little brother stay up as late as he wants tonight - she's giving everyone extra freedoms.  I have a craving for some coffee, so I ask my sister (who is 14)  if she wants to go to the local coffee shop.  We head out to the shop later that evening (around 10:30 pm) and on the way my sister asks me if I want to go to a party.  I didn't really say yes or no (since there wouldn't be anyone there I know) but leave open the possibly of me dropping her off later.  Anyways, about an hour later, I'm just in my room on my computer playing games.  She comes in and asks what I'm doing and I tell her nothing really.  She then leaves.  About an hour passes, and then I go out into the living room and start watching some Sienfield DVDS... I was having a good time (and watched some hilarious episodes like "The Airport") and around 3:00 am the phone rings.  Figuring it was just security telling us our garage door is open, I answer, and it's not security, but the sheriff!  I wake up my dad and give him the phone.  Meanwhile, my thoughts are racing - why is the sheriff calling?  Is my father involved in a crime?  Then it hits me.  Of course!  My sister must of left on her own and the sheriff must of busted the party.....  I thought, this is the kind of stuff that only happens on TV!  Anyways, both of my parents are now awake, furious of course (I try and tell them to go easy on her, after all it was bound to happen sometime, but they don't listen).  My dad is off  to pick her up right now, and meanwhile I'm just looking at the irony of the whole thing.  First off, I almost got in trouble too!  Imagine, if I had agreed to go with her....  also, its strange just how happy everyone was just a few hours ago, and now the household is filled with an uneasy tension.  In fact, it's a lot like an episode of Sienfield.... spooky!

The things which strike me about your story are probably not the points you were making at all. Do people have professional security on shutting household garages where you are ? Why ? Are there armed thugs constantly wandering about  ? You say your sister's being taken into custody was to be expected sooner or later ? Breaking up of parties by police is normal where you are ? Why would parties be regularly broken up by the police ? Nobody in the house knew where your fourteen year old sister was at three in the morning ?

How different households and social customs obviously are in various parts of the world. Unless everybody else does this here too and I'm just an anomaly of course.

lol, that's a good point Ted.  It doesn't all make a lot of sense.

Our neighborhood does have "garage-door" security, even though this is the arguably the safest and most remote neighborhood in the city.  And the cops around here love to break up parties (since they probably have nothing else to be doing!)  And my sister snuck out of her window in her room - and no one heard her because her room is located far away from the other bedrooms.  (actually, if my parents had left the house alarm on, it would have gone off if she had tried to escape.)
