Moonlight's 3rd
on: July 29, 2005, 02:17:56 PM
I've been working on this piece and near finishing it (meaning almost done memorising it not playing it right yet :)) and i came across something with the version i was using. I downloaded this piece from www.sheetmusicarchive.net and I found out that on the 7th page the following 3 bars after the second fortissimo didn't sound the same as a recording that i had of the piece. I even checked some midi files of the piece and they seem to support the recording instead.

So is the sheet music wrong? :-\

The sheet music can definitely be wrong. I have seen mistakes even in  RCM published literature...

By the way, how do you insert images here?

Ummm... I guess you are still looking for an answer here?

So, according to my Henle Urtext edition (which so far is quite reliable), you are right, sheet site is wrong. The measure of the ff and the next one are correct. But, the two after are not. Actually, it is only one measure. You must ignore the RH of the second measure after the ff, and in exchange you have to play the RH of the third measure (while playing LH 2nd measure). When you are at the end of it, just go on with the fourth measure (so you are omitting the LH of the third measure as well.)

You really can't expect much more from a sheet music site (except Piano Street of course...join now!!!  ;D). You will always have to live with the doubts that your "edition" is full of flaws and, the most important, inaccurate in terms of phrasing, dynamics, etc. pp.

Edit. Okay, as I have now noticed, the Moonligh sonata is actually available for all Silver Members of Piano Street, here: https://www.pianoforum.net/search/form.php#silver  :D

However, I fear it has the same mistake as the sheetmusicarchive version.  :(

Oh I see what you mean. I found another sheet music that probably matches what you are saying. Is this what you mean?
