i'm so happy! oh, so happy! i have new bench!
on: July 31, 2005, 12:45:33 AM
made a little visit to cunningham pianos to see rich galassini and his bosendorfers. if you live near philly, go see the store! anyway, i couldn't afford to buy anything but a bench, so we bought a bench. it's a really nice bench! and, it's padded. and STURDY. now, i know what pianists really look for in a bench. it's not a place to store things. look for the size of legs! look for an UNHINGED top. sit from side to side and see if it rocks. and, if it's adjustable, you'll like it a lot for various heights of students.
i'm so happy. AND, rich is cute. but, alas, he is also married, i think.
they restore pianos there, did you know. and, they buy and sell all types of pianos and not JUST bosendorfers as i thought. i got to play on a bechstein. cool, huh. only two pedals of course. my personal favorite was the black estonia piano over in one corner. very clear clean sound. and, a bubinga bosendorfer.

do you know why benches fall apart? it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them. hint: buy a bench that does not hinge. buy it for sturdiness.

Congrats on your new bench! Yes, hinges are bad.
So is your bench padded?

yes, my bench is padded and can be adjusted. it was in my price range too, which helped. i told him the piano i had at home (kawaii upright), and he matched the bench to the piano perfectly. (the style of leg and size of bench matches well).

thanks! yes, having a new bench after all those years of making due. you know, trying to rescrew those little screws into place, only to find that the other two were stripped and the hinge was held in place by the one 1/4'. we tried bigger ones, but they threatened to poke out the top . superglue would have worked, had i thought (a brain) to take the hinges COMPLETELY off and use some wood glue around the whole thing. the idea of using it for storage is insane. it's completely to give weight. put a phone book or two in and glue it.
i should put this in the 'what's your day job.' will glue your bench shut.

Many of them,
If you put it full of music, it will break through and fall on the floor eventually...My sisters did....Now she just puts the music on the floor....

that's funny and sad at the same time. here, we musicians value our music and storage, etc. and somebody comes and spills a cup of juice inside the piano bench. three year olds can destroy anything (i am convinced). having a warped or delapidated bench can destroy your self image. did you sister ever have anyone come and visit and open the bench (only to find it was bottomless. the more you try to hide things, the more obvious. tell her to glue it shut. then she will not have to be embarrassed.
my son, when he was three, used to think that the sides of the keys were slots. he would stick pennies and dimes into them to see what would happen. pencils in the keyhole (to see if it would function as a pencil sharpener).

Yes, I will tell her to nail AND glue the lid down....Maybe it will make her feel better ....
Mine is still almost new....But I am going to buy a quality artist's seat as soon as I get caught up...(famous last words....)...(

the famous last words i heard was 'caught up.' i don't care if he talks a lot. birds of feather flock together. say, did you know there's a concerto that uses recorded arctic birdsongs? how's that for a segue?

Pianonut!!!
It was wonderful meeting you in person. Pianonut is a looker herself
Unfortunately, she came in with her hubby, who turned out to be a great guy. We got along well and had a nice visit. We chatted and played pianos and had a good ole time.
We will see each other again, I am sure!
