sound-alike pieces
on: July 31, 2005, 01:47:32 AM
have you noticed that some compositions have similar melodic fragments and feels to others?

a couple for me, that might have been pointed out elsewhere -

chopin revolutionary - beethoven pathetique - the C D Eb Eb..

liszt trancendental etude no10 - chopin etude op10 no9

there are more, but i have momentarily forgot them...

anyway, any more?

Debussy-Golliwog's Cakewalk and Petit Negre
Ahh llamas......is there anything they can't do?

Liszt's Transcendental Etude No.5 in B-flat major, 'Feux-follets', and Lyapunov's Transcendental Etude No.11 in G major, 'Ronde des sylphes', have so many things in common the Lyapunov sounds almost like a transposition of the Liszt (in fact, I transposed a MIDI of 'Ronde des sylphes' up a minor third and played it back to back with 'Feux-follets' and it almost sounded like the same piece played twice).

ah, that also reminds me, few people know it, but balakirev's famus piece islamey is actually a rip off of lyapunov's 10th etude, very similar feel and style.

although, i think they are equaly great pieces, sometimes a rip-off can be good...but its a little unfair that its so much more popular

Actually, it was the other way around - Balakirev was Lyapunov's teacher, so Lyapunov paid homage to Balakirev by patterning his Transcendental Etude No.10 in B minor, 'Lesghinka', after 'Islamey'.  In fact, some published scores include a subtitle to the effect of 'Piece in the style of Balakirev' on the title page of 'Lesghinka'. (This, perhaps, is why 'Islamey' is the more popular of the two pieces.) I'd forgotten about that, though, thanks for reminding me! :)

ah that does make more sense! i apologise to balakirev...

but in any case, i think they are both equally great pieces, the lyapunov being extremely underplayed.

You might think I am crazy but Schubert's first impromptu sounds a lot like beethoven's "moonlight" sonata. (in a few fragments)

You have to get into the second section of the impromptu before you hear it...

I know, seriously. There are some Liszt pieces for piano that sound remarkably similar to Beethoven symphonies as well!

Ohhhh is that why they are always put together on the same CD?
