competition selection?
on: August 01, 2005, 07:48:28 PM
Hi, i am 12 years old and i am going to compete in the mtna. i have selected the Fantasie-Impromptu by Chopin
Grande Valse Brillante Op.18 by Chopin
Sonata Op. 14, No. 1 by Beethoven

I need to select a baroque and a contemporary one.  I played French Suite No.6, Allemande last year. and The Cat and the Mouse by aaron copland. Do you have an exciting suggestion?

Also, is it wiser to enter the MTNA or the ISMTA at my current level ?

Thanks.

Wow. 12 and already playing the Fantasy Impromptu. I'm almost 16 and I still can't get it perfect.

For baroque, check out some sonatas by Scarlatti. They're amazing and range in difficulty from fairly simple to rather difficult.

For contemporary try Scriabin's Etude Op.2 No.1. It's fantastic and pretty easy if you can reach the chords (they're pretty stretched)

Scarlatti sounds awesome for Baroque.  Now for the contemporary... I think a great piece for your age would be the Kabalevsky prelude no 16.  Now, you may be skeptical, but promise me youll find a recording or sheets of it somewhere.  Give it a chance.  Its a shorter piece with a great theme throughout with a loud banging ending.  Judges would eat it up.

In addition to the scarlatti, you might wanna try some of Daquin pieces. He usually groups them into sets and you can pick and choose the ones you like. Also some Rameau would be a good alternative to Bach. L'Egyptienne is a very nice piece.

For contemporary, I'm glad someone mention Kabalevsky preludes, becuase they are great and very effective. For your level, maybe Hovhanes Macedonian Mountain Dance I would be a snazzy choice. If you have time, you can present both I and II, though I is better.

Also, Barber Excursion No. 4 or Kennan Prelude No. 3 would be a good choice for your level.
