are you convinced by this?!
on: August 02, 2005, 08:07:11 AM
ok so finally learning what we have to do in painting this semester, and for now it's 2 mediated images. so my whole search for a concept wasn't really that important. except they'd probably encourage it, and chances are my lecturers will attempt to create their own concept, or criticise me for not having one, or criticise my technique because it's boring. so i thought i'd just support my two images with a concept that they probably won't even understand fully. but tell me, after looking at these two images (what i'll be basing my drawings on) tell me if you're convinced by my concept that it actually relates to the pics!!
https://tinypic.com/9t0a2v.jpg
The two images are based on two key ideas in Hector Berlioz’s work Symphonie Fantastique. The first being Berlioz’s use of the ‘idee fixe’, where he used a motif to symbolise the image of his love that he obsesses over. My first image represents this, using the face of a girl, simplified hide imperfections and to intrigue the viewer. The angle of the face and expression makes a subtle reference to da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, a painting that has intrigued and mesmerised people for hundreds of years- society is obsessed with this particular painting, as Berlioz is with the woman in his composition.
The second image represents the pain felt in the Symphonie Fantastique from the betrayal and deception the composer experiences. Letting it contrast the first image in colour and complexity, the raw and exposed position of the figure shows that all is not as perfect as it originally seems
please, if you are like ah i really don't see the connection, your concept is a piece of crap, or better yet the pics are a piece of crap, then say so, all constructive comments are bril!! thanks:)

I can see the connections. I think you are a really talented painter. I have seen what some other people consider good painting and you are way above them.

I find the creation reasonable and interesting, with promise for the future...
Of the two,I prefer the second, or "betrayal" Image , however...

do you know why benches fall apart? it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them. hint: buy a bench that does not hinge. buy it for sturdiness.

I love your artwork and see the connection, too. But I have one request. Could you put something new in the link under your posts. I really like the sleeping baby, but I'm hungry for a change. Keep up the good work! God's given you a great talent!

Great Work, Tash!
Harriet Smithson, Berlioz's obsession in the symphony looks like this:
https://www.uaf.edu/english/faculty/reilly/NCHCproject/people/harriet.jpg
Now, I dont know who this girl is you painted in the first painting, but in any case, for my own taste (feel free to tell me to shut up now
), she looks too contemporary to make any obvious reference to Berlioz's symphony Fantastique. Just my opinon... I looked at your artwork before seeing your explanation and I thought the 2nd one was much better - I felt the burning pain, and a cold empty void somewhere deep... I really did think about Symphony Fantastique in that one.. However, I am just lost with the first one... Excellent technique and immaculate structure, however the colors and the composition leave me a little confused.
If I am not mistaken, I remember in one explanation of Symphony fantastique there was something about riding horses in the first movement. If I were trying to achieve the idea of "idee fixe", I would attempt to do something with an open meadow and soft colors -pale pinks and greens. And I wouldnt focus everything on a girl, but more on the way Berlioz would have felt when he was with her. If you were to paint something about what life is like on drugs, you probably wouldnt paint some syringe, but focus more on the blinding euphoria you would see around the syringe..
i dont know if Im full of *** or what... anyway, thats just my initial impression about your paintings. Maybe the problem is with me and Im just not understanding something I should.

aw thanks people it's always nice to know my stuff is appreciated:) but those 2 pics i haven't actually drawn/painted yet! oh no the 2nd one is the photoshopped version of something i drew, the 2nd is just a photoshopped photo, so i can't take credit for making it look like that yet! (however i have started the painted version and it's looking pretty similar:) )
ok so i will update my sig pic for you:)
donjuan, i know where you're coming from, just remember this is only vaguely derived from berlioz and is not actually meant to represent it, it's more of a concept thing. i'm meant to be focusing on the 'mediated image' for these pics, so apparently the actual images i'm painting don't really matter provided they look like photoshopped photos, which is annoying (they always find a way to ruin my ideal conceptions of what i'm meant to be doing grrr)

ah no...
but my lecturer likes what i'm doing with the face, which is a good start! as for the other one, i think i have to mediate it a little more...
