Gigues!
on: August 07, 2005, 03:33:28 AM
I really like gigues. Gigues are like joy, bursting onto the scene in complete surprise.

I like their speed, motion, playfulness, and compactness. I like what composers have done with them, with the variations in rhythm and articulation.

I am aware of Bach's, Brahms', and Mozart's gigues, and just now found a new one (!) by Alkan recorded by Ronald Smith.

Who else wrote gigues? I'm assuming that there were probably many baroque composers that did, but I'm interested in all periods. I'm hoping there are many I haven't discovered yet. And if anyone wants to share their favorites, that would be great.

Speaking of the second English Suite, that Bouree is just incredible.  I love it so.  Sorry, I know we're talking about Gigues, but go listen to that bouree.

The first one is great, the second is kinda anodyne. The suite in general is great, probably the strongest of the 6. I know the prelude by heart, btw.  ;)
