Hand Crossings-scarlatti
on: August 08, 2005, 01:35:04 PM
COuld someone elaborate as to what is the PURPOSE of those seemingly... random hand crossing passages?

To me it seems like it has no other purpose other than to make it look flashy...

I think Bernhard mentioned elsewhere that hand-crossing was considered the height of virtuosity in Scarlatti's day.

they didn't have fans or airconditioning, either.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

No, I think the contrasting notes in the same harmonic structure, alternating between low and high pitched notes is a great effect. I love this part of virtuosity, and my favorite examples are probably Scarlatti's K 27 Sonata, and Bach's 5th Goldberg Variation.

 I totally agree with Barbosa.

Plus, it's not random--like in the fifth Goldberg Variation the left hand really needs to  cross so the right hand can go on with those sixteenth notes.

I think you're appearing upset because you're having trouble executing the crossings.  You need to move your shoulder more.  It will help.

And pianonut, LOL as always!  You are so funny!!

actually no i don't have any trouble with any of them... just some passages i find that ... playing it "un normally" is easier than what's written.

SO basically its like the baroque version of liszt then

fair nuff :D
