Grades
on: August 09, 2005, 06:37:13 PM
Since I'm fairly new, I'm noticing this grading system.  Out of curosity . . . could one grade my current rep, with more to be added later

Bach Prelude and Fugue in G minor from Book I
Beethoven's The Tempest (each movement separately, please)
Bartok Allegro Barbaro
Mozart K.283
Chopin Op.48 No.1 in Cm

Im not an expert but i think the grades are:

Bach - 8
Beethoven (All movements) - 9
Bartok - 8
Mozart - 8
Chopin - 8

The masterpiece tell the performer what to do, and not the performer telling the piece what it should be like, or the cocomposer what he ought to have composed.

You need to be aware that there is more than one grading system: ABRSM is the biggest one in the UK; RCM biggest in Canada and for that matter North America (since the US doesn't have the same system...). They grade pieces very differently -- ABRSM has fewer grades; ABRSM Grade 4 is approximately equivalent to RCM Grade 7, for instance. Also, as Bernhard pointed out recently, no one has yet invented a difficultimeter, so it's all subjective anyway.

Oh . . . ok. I guess I was just trying to get a sense of the difficulty of my program. But you're right it is all subjective.
