What's your favorite musical? :D
on: August 15, 2005, 12:37:22 AM
:o :o :o "I don't particularly like musicals," say the serious pianists condescendingly, "In fact, I ONLY play Beethoven."

Not sure this has been asked, but I figured it was time.

Fiddler on the Roof.
I saw it live (as a play) once, 'twas awesome. Way better than the movie even, haha.
I want to see Phantom of the Opera sometime...

In no particular order -

Ragtime
The Phantom of the Opera
Les Miserables
Titanic, The Musical

Those are my top 4, but there are so many others that I also love.

Also, great music is certainly not limited to one genre alone. Those who think so should not be taken seriously.

In order:

1. Les Miserables
2. Woman In White
3. Phantom of The Opera

However, to play the piano and sing (in order):

1. Phantom of The Opera
2. Woman In White
3. Les Miserables

But I prefer the book.

I like any that let me play in the pit orchestra.  Last two I did were Guys & Dolls, and Wonderful Town, both a lot of fun.

But just to listen to, I like the old ones with singable songs.

Sondheim, my favorite:

"A Little Night Music"
"Sunday in the Park with George"
"Into the Woods"

Then maybe Bernstein's "West Side Story" and "Candide."

Then Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Carousel," "Oklahoma," and "South Pacific."

Oh West Side Story anday! Bernstein was such a fantastic composer, there's so much to listen to - i especially admire his orchestration and mix of genres that conflict musically and in the story - jazz vs latin American to represent the Jets vs the Sharks.

chess?  bob, you've gone off the deep end.  you are too serious.  i would suggest a little 'singing in the rain.'  go to your closet and get the umbrella.  next time it rains, go outside and pretend you are fred astaire.  that will cure you of this chess idea.  chess?  what ever made you say chess?  chess is not a musical.  who would compose a musical about chess? unless you're talking sort of like the wizard of oz or something.

chess?  who would compose a musical named chess.  stravinsky?  is there a musical named chess?  (looks up on the internet)

Chess is a musical.  I heard it was a total flop.

Definitely Candide first, followed by (in no particular order) West Side Story, Man of La Mancha, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Kiss Me Kate, and maybe Into the Woods. (By the way, Mitch Leigh, the composer of Man of La Mancha, was a student of Milhaud and when I performed in the pit I loved to point out the polytonal sections. Listen closely and you'll hear it.)
