Alfred's Course Software - worth using?
on: August 18, 2005, 07:03:04 AM
My daughter's teacher uses the Alfred series.

Having just started a new book, we noticed it mentions "Theory game software" is now available to accompany all levels.

Has anyone seen or used this?  Sometimes kids pay more attention or work harder on a computer than they do on a workbook.

I haven't seen all the theory game software, but I do own and occassionally use Theory Games Level 1a-2.  It's cute and the kids like it....It has different theory games that help with note identification, note values and rhythm, intervals and scales, vocabulary...The graphics are cute...turtles, frogs...

Greetings

I haven't seen the software you mentioned but I have used a program called "KeyNote Music Drills" 8) that is very good on note recognition and key signatures etc. You can download an evaluation copy from the following site. It is an inexpensive program to purchase on-line.

We have plenty of methods and software based on drills, drills and more drills.
It is time to use another approach: students have to UNDERSTAND music system logically. It would make them independant and really educated.

Alfred does a terrific job with all their methods.  I know some of the composers who write for them and believe me they are for the students and teachers 100%!  Talk to your daughter's teacher about the software.  Some people are comfortable with using it and some aren't.  NOT using it doesn't make you any less serious or committed.

I haven't used it, but I can't see how it would hurt, esp if it's tied in by the same publisher.

If it's teaching theory, that sounds worthwhile.  If it only provides accompaniment, I would be less likely to buy it.
