Rope Moulding
on: July 27, 2003, 06:25:29 PM
I saw a Kimball baby grand that had a piece of rope on the inside of the case running from one side all the way around the back to the other side on top of the sound board. Does anyone know the function of this? Was this unique to Kimball (piano is prpbably 15 to 20 years old) or did others have this also?

From what I can tell it's just a style thing. I saw it on some of the pianos I looked at - Bluthner still uses it- they make a very traditional elegant piano, and like the rope. I don't think it serves any other purpose -
anybody know more?

Yes, it is for decoration only. The big Bluthners use this as well and I asked the main importer about this personally and he said that it is just for show. He noted that if you removed it, it would leave some glue spots on the case, so he recommended it not be removed.
