Have you ever considered a Rachmaninoff Prelude?  These are often liked my most people.  Gershwin 3 preludes are an interesting Jazz selection, and I do believe theres lots to pick from Ravel.  Miroirs I think.  Rachmaninoff would be the easy safe selection.
