Viardo is one of the greatest living pianists; He won the Cliburn in 1975 and for some reason was supressed when he returned to the U.S.S.R. He now teaches at North Texas University, and apparently doesn't play too much, but I heard a recent faculty recital recording of him from a former students of mine who is studying there; I've never heard better Prokofiev from anyone.

Oh sorry, we're not talking about his pianism; can't comment on his charm. ;D

Hey finally a long-awaited thread in search of a charming male pianist. My partner thinks that I myself am quite charming and handsome  ;D (you sure  "beautiful"would be a word to describe us men? !)

Though I have a strong interest in Asian pianists (Alan Chow, Yundi Li & Ning An),  try Piotr Anderszewski, Robert Thies, Andrew Russo & Daniel Wnukowski.

to me, piano is like martial arts.  you impress women by being professional and planning your music and not just playing whatever happens to come out.  i wouldn't like to hear a man that was 'hot' and couldn't play because his masculinity was too strong to let his sensitivity come out.

To answer the original question: "Why always female pianists?"

Because male pianists are ugly. Except when they look like female pianists. And with Yundi Li above I rest my case. ;)

When a pianist is playing, we can look for their physical beauty, how they look outside.
But it isnt the most important thing! The beauty is not just the eyes, the smile, the hair, bla bla bla....This is the less important fact.
There are some pianists - in this case - male pianists, that become beautiful because of what their're giving to us with their playing, their feelings, emotions, expressions on their face, strenght, masculinity, etc.. Wow
Yesterday I heard Daniel Barendoim playng the Apassionata Sonate. He is not a beautiful man, but...wow, when he's playing, he's amazing...

only time i disagree with my own post AND bernhards.  the best looking male pianists look male (work out at least minimally and have some upper body strength) and act it, too.  i like sensitivity in male pianists, but also strength and endurance in long pieces.  (goes for women pianists,t oo, to a certain extent).  you have to have back that holds up.

i find women with bulging muscle arms sort of distasteful, but yet, they could be beatiful if compared to one another in bodybuilding challenges.  i suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  some men like stronger women, and visa-versa.  it's just that if they are on steroids' they might start growing facial hair and losing fat, which women need in certain places to look like women.

OK, girls and (presumably gay or bi) boys, we can not let this thread die without coming up with some piano heartthrobs for us to idolize. Who the hell else is a cute boy pianist?

sorry to be a deadbeat on this, but i like andre rieu (who's a violinist) because he really gets into his music and likes to share the music with others.  he's handsome, but he doesn't necessarily focus on himself.  he focuses on whether people are having a good time or not.  when i look at him, i don't think - ooh, i'd like to kiss him, but rather he's attractive and charming.  plus, he has people in such a good mood they start dancing.  to me, this is the highest expression of music - when you can get people to start moving (even a foot swing).  suppose it's not done with classical piano so much (people bobbing their heads or starting to clap along) - but if you're doing it mentally - it's great too.

skill is attractive.  and looks are basically moot - but they don't hurt.  if andre rieu was bald, some people would still think he was sexy.  i'd definately kiss him on the cheek if i could.  of course, if you go to a recital and afterwards try to kiss them you might have a bodyguard, manager, or usher throw you out immediately.  so where's the incentive?  plus, my husband would get jealous.

Yundi Li, in that picture, looks hideous and gay.  I have nothing against gay people, but he just looks really ugly.

No question.  Daniel Barenboim.  The guy's a genius @ the kybd & on the podium.  A linguist who is fluent in at least 3 different languages and stylistically at home in almost any musical genre.

What about Glenn Gould? When he was much younger (22 years old ish...) I think he's pretty good looking for a pianist - better than most names that have been mentioned.

kinda moose-ish walk.  one foot a little inward.  i'd say, he's about as sexy as a moose.

ps maybe like jane goodall, he studied how they behaved and walked and decided that people were not as interesting to study as animals.  i can sort of see him foraging after a concert.

i'm sorry.  i loved his eccentricity at the time - and he probably still benefits from it in the grave.  and, as you say, he wasn't bad looking.   he just had a funny walk.  he was basically a funny but VERY quiet guy - from what i hear.  i think he was not really a 'people person.'

Haha don't apologize :) He is rather strange - I'm not sure about him being a quiet guy though.  There's this interview and he was imitating actor for about 10 minutes with the interviewer - I was thinking....right...okay. He was putting on this funny voice it's almost scary.

I found Jemboy rather cute. :D

Y'know, that kid in the videos playing Liszt's Mazeppa. Bit egoistic, but hey, he's nice to look at. Hold on, where is that link?

Found it ---> https://perso.wanadoo.fr/jemboy/video.html

I think Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli looks scary on stage.
