There's the Prokofiev recording, which sucks, and the Moiseiwitsch, which (like every other moiseiwitsch) may irritate you due to his unorthodox reading. I like i tho, you can check www.naxos.com for it.

Yes , they are the bst IMO! He doesn't use Prokofiev as a punching bag like many pianists do; if you want to hit the piano  >:(  ( someday it will hit you back  ;D ) play some Ornstein.

If we're talking about the same proko recording, which is the 1935 one, it really doesn't do anything for me, in the virtuosity argument nor the musical. I know - comparing moiseiwitsch with proko and then favouring moiseiwitsch may come as an ignorant remark, but it's just the way these recordings present themselves to me. Anyway, I already changed my mind and I favour Gavrilov, which is something I can deffo get away with.

here you go: 3,48 MB Gavrilov
https://rapidshare.de/files/4437241/prokofiev_romeo__juliet_ravel_gaspard_de_la_nuit_11_prokofiev_suggestion_diabolique_op_4_no_4.mp3.html

(granted proko's version of the piece may match his writing better, but mood may vary and so may preferences)

whatever.

Boris Berman plays the weakest Scriabin Sonatas 4 and 5 that I've ever heard.

Sure, just wanted to know why, I have an inquiring mind  :D I think Moisewitsch's and Profofiev's interpretations are very similair. My favorite is Gyorgy Sandor, although I dislike many of his other recordings. I just think it's always fascinating to hear a great composer who was also a great pianist have a go at one of his own pieces. You must admit Prokofiev is laser clean! The first time I ever heard it what struck me was the clean disciplined approach as opposed to the "punching bag" school of Prokofiev playing (which Sandor often indulges in). I will listen to the Gavrilov, I'm curious now

I have never heard his Scriabin recordings, but I remember him playing the Sonata Fantasy in g#minor and the 4th Sonata in a recital some years ago, I enjoyed the Sonata Fantasy, he had trouble with the 4th Sonata though, some notes slipped and it effected his groove, not pretty! I've also heard him play Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues and probably the best Debussy I've ever heard live, on records Michelangeli is as good. Scriabin is a tricky thing to interpret, particularly the middle period pieces ( aprox. op 27 to op.58) I would be cutious to hear these Scriabin recordings...who do you like?

For the Scriabin 4th, I prefer Vladimir Sofronitsky.

Oh yes, that's rightly so. The evenness between sound and no-sound is amazing on the proko recording, dare I say 'modernness' (in a neo-classical way, sure)... But, for the moment, I just had the need to hear some things stand out more than other things, and proko's recording is flat & grey and hypnotic, as I think he really intended it to be when he wrote it. I hope I'm making this point clear. Oh dear :)

Anyway, tell me what you think of the gavrilov's.

And for the Scriabin 4th, I think the live recording of Nelson Freire's in the 80s has the most delicious tone and "builds-up's" I heard. Richter takes the 5th ;)

IMO, Sofronitsky and Horowitz own the Scriabin 5th. Sofronitsky is messier, but both recordings are orgasmic.

I didn't like sofrinitsky's 4th.  Pletnev's 4th is rather good.  I have Ogdon doing the complete Scriabin sonatas - his loud sounds occasionally are quite ugly but his soft, mysterious playing is truly hypnotic!
Ahm, as for the actual post :D I rather like prokofiev's recording.
Never look at the trombones. You'll only encourage them.

When we could be investment banking or lawering, making $$$$....

Thank you.

Let's take the Scriabin disscussion elsewhere, mikey's right :P
